Son of Cognac Mayor Explains Brandy Shortage of War Years I
By George Kennedy
The great brandy shortage of
the war years was explained to
day by Michel Martell of Cognac,
France, who is staying at the
| Hotel Statler.
“The occupation was very diffi
cult,” said Mr. Martell, a Cam
bridge graduate' whose accent is
more English than French.
"My father, who died last win
ter, was the mayor of Cognac.
Over there a mayor is responsible
for many more things than your
mayors are. The Germans were
holding him responsible for brandy
production.
Used the Slow-Down.
“And we were giving them the
slow-down. There would be a
breakdown in the bottle factory.
Then when that was fixed, the
corks would arrive and they would
be the wrong size. After that was
taken care of, it would be found
that the cases had been made
wrong and the bottles wouldn’t
fit.
“They would threaten to send
me back to Germany. I was with
FBI Investigates Attack On Judge Waring's Home
By th« Associated Press
SAVANNAH, Ga., Oct. 14.—'The
FBI is investigating a fusillade
that shattered a window glass and
door screen at the home of Fed
eral Judge J. Waties Waring at
! Charleston, S. C.
Special Agent M. W. McFarlin
disclosed last night the inquiry
was authorized by Washington
and had already begun. Several;
United States deputy marshals
are guarding the Waring home.
The bombardment Monday
night, apparently from a passing
auto, struck the residence of the
jurist and his wife, both acid
critics of racial segregation and
treatment of Negroes in the South.
Judge Waring blamed the at
tack on the Ku Klux Klan.
He has been the target of bit
ter criticism in some Southern
circles since he ruled a few years
ago that Negroes cannot be barre»
from the South Carolina Demo
cratic primary.

the British in Dunkirk in 1940
as a liaison officer and was taken
prisoner there. I was repatriated
in 1943, after they decided to
release the men over 45. It was
merely a matter of growing a
beard and looking 50 and forging
papers to prove it.”
Mr. Martell, who is plump, blue
eyed and balding, is now 39. He
was 32 then.
Had the Best Answer.
“They would threaten to send
me back, and I would say, ‘bf
course, you can do that, but it
won't get you any more brandy.’
They needed that brandy on the
eastern front to help them get
through the Russian winters, and
we didn’t want them to have it.”
Mr. Martell will leave by air
for Venezuela Tuesday. He is very
fond of the United States, but he
regrets the American custom of
drinking brandy in pony (half
size) glasses.
The United States consumes
300.000 cases of French brandies
each year, and Venezuela, a little
country where they are not afraid
of full-sized drinks, consumes
200.000 cases.
He is very fond of Venezuela.
