Lewis The way out of Bates street is I easy when you haven’t lived i there—you hail a taxi and you are | gone. But when you have lived there for a long time, it is a sort of haven against the world where you know all your neighbors, and it is hard to leave, or to think about leaving. As things stand today, every one i on Bates street is having to think about leaving. And the tenants in the area of which Bates street I is the heart are also having to think about moving. For the ! houses are being sold. 400 Persons to Move. In fact, Bates street and its surrounding neighborhood is undergoing one of the largest mass migrations in Washington’s his tory. More than 400 persons have either moved in the last few days, or are facing the prospect of mov ing soon. They are facing this problem because, as The Star revealed last Saturday, one of the Nation’s most interesting experiments in pri vately owned low rent housing finally has come to an end. The Washington Sanitary Improve ment Co.’s low-rent homes have been purchased by new owners, who are selling the 400 flats in the Bates street area, just south of Florida avenue N.W., instead of continuing to rent them. “To most of us, it’s like having the bottom drop out of every thing,” said one resident today. Long-Time Tenants. Aside from the sentimental wrench of leaving a neighborhood where you’ve lived a long time | (most of the tenants have lived there for more than 10 years), it is virtually impossible to find rents anywhere else as low as those on Bates street. Rents for a four room flat average about $22.50. To some living in the area, pay i ing more rent won’t be a hardship. ;But to the older residents, some of whom have retired or have been | widowed, finding additional money 'for rent will be Impossible. And to the families with children, the problem will be even greater be cause of the scarcity of homes. One widow said: “I lived here 22 years. I’ve been a widow 24 years, with four chil dren. If it hadn’t been for the low rents on Bates street, I don’t know how I could have brought up my children. The worst is over now, and I’m not worried about myself. I will find a place sontewhere.” Lived Here 33 Years. An elderly woman said: “My husband and I have lived here 33 years. I don’t know what we’d do if it wasn’t for my daugh ter. She has a good job, and she’s going to help us. She has found an apartment for us, and we’re all going to live together. I didn’t realize rents were so terrible until we had to hunt an apartment.” Another long-time resident said: “We have paid $21.08 a month, and when we had to find another place we first thought of buying. We found we couldn’t afford to buy, so we’re going to try to find an apartment. My daughter says we’ll probably have to pay $75 or $80 a month. It’s going to be an awful burden on my daughter, but what can we do?” Many Already Moved. Many persons already have moved out of the area—into apartments mostly, but a few Into homes they have bought. The ma jority, however, are still perplexed about what to do. One woman said she and her husband have lived on Bates street since 1907 and have been able to “get by” on about $125 a month in old-age pensions, plus help from children. “I don’t know what we’re go ing to do now,” she said. “We fully intended to spend the rest of our lives here. It’s been home to us. We have thought about going to Culpeper to live. But we’re better off than some. I know some peo ple who will have to go to Blue Plains (the District home for the indigent aged).” A number of tenants seem to worry more about what will hap pen to their pets than to them selves. “We can have pets here, you know,” said one 20-year resident. “But where else can you And a place where you can have pets? I don’t know what I’m going to do with Frisky.” Frisky is the family dog. Mrs. Virginia Howdershell, a resident of Bates street for 43 years and a widow for six years, is upset over having to give up her piano. “I hate to go,” she said. “It has been like one, big family, this street. But what I’ll miss the most, I guess, is my piano. “I’ve been playing for years, and it’s just breaking my heart to give up the piano. There’s no place for it where I’m going. We’re trying to smile now, but it’s hard to leave.” Nowhere on the street was there any resentment against the buy ers. The 400 flats have been sold to colored families, the new own ers said. "We’re not mad at the colored families,” one woman summed it up. “It’s not their fault. They must have places to live too.” I EXPERT TV REPAIRS AT LOWER COST! Why pay more?
