Navy Officer, Victim of Mine, Praises'Frogmen' for Rescues
The first naval casualty of the
Korean war to be treated at the
Bethesda Naval Hospital told the
story yesterday of how his ship
went down
when it struck
an enemy mine.
He is Lt.

W. Eidsness. 29,
of 1401 East
Capitol street,
who faces sev
eral bed-ridden
months because
of fractures to
his right arm
and hand and
injuries to his
lower left leg.

thing I remember, those of us on
the bridge took* a beating.

"I don’t remember hearing the
explosion, but just about every
one on the bridge was hit. The
skipper was wounded. I tried to
help him and the other wounded
men. but I couldn’t do much.
“Then I noticed I was bleeding
from injuries to my head and
other parts of my body. It was
three days later before the real
pain started to come.
“I still didn’t know what hap
pened. I saw water coming up on
the main deck, so I slid down to
it alongside a kid with a broken
leg.
“We sat on the deck for a little
while, then decided to slip into
the water. I took off my life
preserver, then my parka, and re
placed the life preserver before
going into the water.
Rescued by "Frogmen.”
“We were in the water about 30
minutes, I would estimate, before
some frogmen (underwater demo
lition team men) pulled us onto
a raft.”
Lt. Eidsness had high praise for
the frogmen. If it hadn’t been
for them, he said, many of the
wounded men on his minesweeper
would have gone down with the*
ship They had to act fast, he
said, because the minesweeper
sank in about five minutes.
Lt. Eidsness said, “We really
had it tough,” but there was pride
in his voice when he talked of his
gun crew.
“That was a good gun crew,”
he said. “They could shoot the
whiskers off a cat.”

NEW YORK, Nov. 21.—Two
men accused by Federal agents of
trying to get a fortune in black
market gold out of the country
by air are free today on bond.
"I believe we have found the
trail of an international gold
smuggling ring,” United States
Attorney Frank J. Parker said in
Brooklyn after their arrest.
The two. Manfred Fliegel, 25,
of New York, and Charles H.
Manning, 37, of Sydney. Australia,
were arrested la6t Friday as they
were about to board a plane leav
ing La Guardia Field for India.
Agents said they had 150
pounds of gold cleverly hidden in
the false bottoms of shoes or in
the false sides of luggage.
The gold’s worth on the Indian
black market was estimated at up
to $240,000. The gold, seized by
the Government, has a face value
of $84,000 here.
Bonds of $25,000 each were re
duced yesterday to $12,800 for
Manning and $7,500 for FliegeJ.
They posted the bail and were re
leased.
The men are accused of vio
lating the Gold Reserve Act, which
bans the transport or export of
gold without a license.
Mexico Bus Crash Kills 10
GUANAJUATO, Mexico, Nov 21
(/P).—Ten persons were killed and
33 injured yesterday in a collision
between a truck and a bus on the
highway outside the city. The bus
was filled with a sports group,
from nearby Romita, which had
marched in the holiday parade
here. Guanajuato is 175 miles
northwest of Mexico City.
