Bean, 75, a retired Washington businessman, who at 21 worked to free the people of Cuba from Spanish rule, died yes terday at his home, 3406 Q street N.W. Mr. Bean was manager of the American Gas Co.’s office here from 1928 until his retirement in 1946. An active Re publican, Mr. Bean also served at var ious times as Mayor, - post master and City Mr- B'*n Councilman of Port Tampa City, Fla. When he attained manhood, Mr. Bean became interested in Cuba. He was instrumental in smuggling arms into that country. Later, after the United States de claration of war against Spain, he helped to organize the Port Tampa Naval Reserves, and served with them until the end of the war. Sanitation Engineer. In January, 1900, he was ap pointed chief engineer of sanita tion for Cuba. He served under Gen. Leonard Wood in this capac ity for a year and a half. His love for Cuba and its people lasted throughout his lifetime. He returned there many times, and during his last illness the government of Cuba recognized his services in their behalf by dec orating him with the Order of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes. In 1909, Mr. Bean was ap pointed by President Taft as a member of a committee to in vestigate Post Office employment, to recommend a unified system of work and to investigate and rec ommend labor-saving devices. Family Florida Pioneers. Mr. Bean was born in Willi mantic, Conn., May 29, 1875, the son of the late George E. and Abbie Foss Bean. When he was 7, his family moved to Florida as pioneers, settling at Port Tampa City. He was educated in public schools and a business college in Florida. He was a member of the Na tional Press Club, the National Republican Club and St. John’s Episcopal Church in Georgetown. Mr. Bean is survived by his widow, the former Helen Mac George of New York City now living at the Q street address; one daughter by a former mar riage, Mrs. Gladys Holdstock Tampa; a granddaughter, Mrs. Jacqueline Henderson, Gainesville, Fla.; a brother, H. F. Bean, Mobile, Ala., and four sisters, Mrs. Lula Colman, and Mrs. Anna Maria Holdstock. both of Florida, and Mrs. Mary Hall, Hartsdale, N. Y., and Mrs. Edith Littlefield, Blackshear, Ga. Admits Szigeti After 5-Day Detention By the Associated Press NEW YORK, Nov. 21.—Joseph Szigeti, 58-year-old Hungarian born violin virtuoso, prepared to day to leave on his 25th American concert tour after his release from Ellis Island. The musician, one of the fore most living concert violinists, was detained five days at Ellis Island after his arrival here from Paris. Immigration and Naturalization Service officials gave no reason for Mr. Szigeti’s detention and gave no explanation on his release. The violinist’s lawyer, Sidney Diamond, said, however, that a board of special inquiry had or dered that the virutoso be “ad mitted as a returning permanent resident.’ Although the precise nature of the charges against Mr. Szigeti were not disclased, the New York Times said it had learned they were based on the use of the musi cian’s name as sponsor or patron of several war-time committees or organizations subsequently de clared to be subversive by the United States Attorney General. Sun Fo Finally Wins Passport for France By the Associated Press HONG KONG, Nov. 21.—Uncon firmed reports were heard here to day that Dr. Sun Fo, son of the late Dr. Sun Yat-sen, finally has won a passport from the Chiang Kai-shek regime on Formosa and plans to depart soon for France. The former prime minister of Nationalist China has been living in semiexile at Hong Kong since the Nationalists gave up China’s mainland to the Communists. The refugee Nationalist govern ment at Foromsa long had refused to issue him a passport. Appar ently it hoped he might be per suaded to return to Formosa and bring his own wide following into the Nationalist fold. Sun Fo adamantly has refused reconciliation. Cole, 61, of 2425 Girard place N.E., a Post Office Department mechanic and World War I veteran, was found dead in the men’s room of the Post Office garage this morning. Death ap parently was caused by a heart at tack. Mr. Cole, a native of Montgom ery County, had lived in the Wash ington area all his life. He joined the Post Office Department in 1946 as a special mechanic. Previously he was employed at Fort Myer as an auto mechanic. He served as a corporal in the Army in World War I. McCathran, Insurance Man, Dies Rodney Rathbone McCathran, 65, retired representative of the Travelers Insurance Co., died Sunday in Montgomery County General Hospital. He had been in ill health for several years. For the last 16 years, Mr. Mc Cathran had been a resident of Washington Grove, Md-» and for 10 years was a trustee of the Gaithersburg (Md.) High School. He retired from the insurance company in 1948, after 34 years’ service. Mr. McCathran was bom in Washington, the son of Stillman J. and Frances Josephine Mc Cathran. He was a graduate of the old Central High School and Wesleyan University in Middle town, Conn. For several years he taught at the Peekskill (N. Y.) Military Academy and was with the Travelers Company in Scars dale, N. Y., before he came to the Washington office in 1934. Mr. McCathran was a member of the Odd Fellows, the Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity and the As cension Chapel Episcopal Church in Gaithersburg. His first wife, the former Grace Aver ill Dayton, died in 1928. He remarried two years later and is survived by his second wife, Mrs. Eleanor S. McCathran. Three children by his second wife survive.
