Hollywood Diary Damone Off to Service After Road Show Date "" By Sheilah Graham HOLLYWOOD. Vic Damone is taking his last look at Hollywood for what may be a long time. He will go into the Army after his two-week engage ment at Las Vegas. Vic is young, at the top of his popularity. It shouldn’t be too difficult for him to pick up his career where he is now leaving off. Charlie Chaplin is rehearsing Barbara Bates before he tests her for his leading lady in “Limelight.” The plan as of now is to make the picture here. Barbara is the pretty miss in the closing scene in “AH About Eve.” * * * * Burt Lancaster has hired Mike Curtiz to direct his “Crimson Pirate” picture in Italy. The pi rate gals in the picture, Burt tells me on the set of his current “Ten Tall Men,” are likely to be Glynis Johns and Joan Greenwood, two popular British actresses. Bogey and baby are so in love with Paris they will remain at the Ritz until Katharine Hepburn and her coach, Constance Collier, ar rive in London for the “African Queen” picture. Not only Ethel Barrymore, but the twins also are out of “Oh. Baby.” And the babies are the real reason why Ethel cried, “Help!” and asked to be released.; Ethel couldn’t take it because she had to keep getting down on her knees or to chase them. Spring Byington may take over. Josephine Hull would be a pip, but she’s busy. * * * * Jane Wyman visits the Cocoar.ct Grove with Greg Bautzer, who stops Orchestra Leader Eddie Bergman and has him play Jane’s favorite song, “Be My Love,” which Greg is very happy to be. Patricia Neal goes legit at La Jolla this summer. She plays the Jessica Tandy role in “Hilda Crane.” (Released by North American Newspaper Alliance.) Uptown Pharmacy 3530 Conn. Ave. N.W. Mickey advises her not to tell the police of their mistake in identifying the mur dered girl for fear some one might be out to kill Tania. She returns to the city with him, recalling an understudy she once had by the name of Nina Hardwicke, who looked very much like Tania. Mickey’s apartment was the en tire second floor of a converted brownstone house in the West Seventies. It was rather dark, but the rooms were large. It was fur nished with taste and it exuded comfort. No one had paid the slightest attention to either of them when Mickey parked his car out front and took Tania upstairs. First he sat her down on a sofa before a big square coffee table, then he fixed her a short scotch and soda, insisting she drink it to warm her body and quiet her nerves. A few minutes later he made coffee, and brought in a platter of bacon, scrambled eggs, and toast. “You have to eat, kid,” he in sisted. "We eat first, then swing into action. Something tells me we’re both going to need good steady nerves for a couple of days. I know you’ve got plenty of cour age, Tani, plenty of fight in you, or you wouldn’t have climbed to the top of your profession. Get up your reserves, kid.” She tried to make her smile re assuring, yet her whole body felt cold, as if death had breathed on her, and had not yet passed by. “I’m all right,” she said. "Just nervous.” She paced the floor of the living room while Mickey started calling hotels from the phone in the bed room. Through the open door she could hear him dialing, asking for LEGAL NOTICES LEONARD A. BLOCK, GOO F Street, N.W. Washington, D. C. The clerk looked up from the desk and smiled. “Hello, Miss Hardwicke. Them dark glasses make you look like a movie actress.” Tania smiled and made no an swer. The elevator stopped at the seventh floor and she got out. The cardboard tag on the key said, “716.” She walked down the cor ridor, aware of the weakness in her knees, the tenseness in her' throat. She fitted the key into “716,” opened the door and walked in, then locked the door behind her. It was a corner suite, sitting room, bedroom and bath, newly decorated, newly furnished, with bright ftowered drapes and gay framed prints on the walls. For a dancer who hadn’t been around the theater in two years, Nina Hardwicke had done herself very well, Tania thought. She went directly to ‘a chest of drawers in the bedroom and began going through them, feeling like a thief. The feeling of guilt didn’t last long. In the second drawer, beneath a pile of lingerie, she found several photographs of her-; self, full face and profile. N~xt to them were several photographs of Nina. All of the pictures were well handled, as if the girl had studied them often and intently. At the back of the drawer was a pad of smooth paper. Really troubled now, Tania went through the other drawers, and found a diary hidden in the bot tom one. She read it swiftly, and as she read she began feeling sick inside. In the last entry, two weeks ago, Nina had written that she had decided to pass herself off in stores and restaurants as Tania Lynn. She wrote: “I’ve got her handwriting per fected now. I can charge on her accounts. Write checks, too? If I want to, I can even go to shows, pass as Tania, and sign auto graph books. If I’m careful, this racket ought to last atfhile. I have to lay off the other one till . . The sentence wasn’t finished. Suddenly the telephone shrilled through the silent rooms. (To Be Continued.)
