Mrs. MacArthur Takes 'Window-Wishing' Tour By tK. Associated Press • NEW YORK, May 14.—Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s wife spent part of Mother’s Day “window (Fishing” along Fifth avenue. She strolled along the avenue yesterday for about a mile, ac companied by her husband’s doc tor, Col. Charles Canada. Few persons recognized her. “I’ve only been window wish ing,” Mrs. MacArthur said later. ‘There are so many things that [ need that it will require a little nore thinking before I actually puy.” Meanwhile, Gen. MacArthur re portedly remained in the family’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel suite. A member of his staff said he pad no plans for public appear ances today. The general made his first ap pearance in civilian clothes in 11 rears Saturday, when t\e went to he Polo ground, with Mrs. Mac Vrthur and saw the Phillies beat he-Giants, 6 to 5. 2O-Year-Old Car Still Hot, Service Attendant Finds ly th* Associated Press MEMPHIS, Tenn.,’ May 14. —A 20-year-old automobile backfired yesterday, set fire to a filling station and sent nearby apartment dwellers into the streets in near panic. The blaze was confined to the service station area. No one was injured. Service At tendant J. C. Haynes said flames shot from the car’s exhaust pipe as the gas tank was being filled, set the gaso line hose afire, spread to the pumps and then to the sta tion. Women's Federation Conyenes; Theme to Be Family Protection Sy lha Aliociatad Pnil - HOUSTON, Tex., May 14.—The | General Federation of Women’s Clubs will consider the protec tion of families during mobiliza tion at its 60th annual convention this week. The majority of the 750,000 women in the 14,500 clubs that are members of the National Fed eration are housewives and mothers. Two thousand delegates started gathering here today. Their con vention opens formally tonight with a banquet. A resolution on family protec tion during mobilization is among 20 resolutions to be presented to the convention. The resolutions already have been distributed to the various clubs in the 48 States, the Dis trict of Columbia and Alaska. They will be presented to the convention Wednesday. On protecting the family, the resolution declares that the “pre sent and future strength of the United States is dependent on the proper training of our youth and upon the protection of mothers and youth in the home.’’ It asks that recruiting for industry be di rected primarily to women with few homemaking responsibilities Mrs. Hiram Cole Houghton, Na tional Federation president, of Red Oak, Iowa, welcomed Jthe Junior Federation delegates in a speech today with a reminder of just how far women have pushed back their horizons. -f-' Oil Barges Moving CANTON, Mo..
