Drama News and Reviews • Trans-Lux's 'The Magnet' Another Lively Boy Tale By Jay Carmody There is nothing boring about this world as seen through th eyes of a 10-year-old boy. It is a mixture of fascinating and ter rifying adventures and, Heaven be thanked, the balance betweei the two is just about right to let a lad make it to manhood. The British make a good thing of reminding everyone of thii in their movies. They are quite pleasant about it as in the cast oi The Magnet, now at the Trans Lux, and sometimes they become brilliant, indeed, as in the instance of “The Fallen Idol.” This allusion to the two screen plays in a single sentence is not to suggest that the former is the equal of the latter. "The Magnet” is on the same general theme, however, and it is a disarmingly cheerful item. It is an unpretentious little tale of a boy given an enforced holi day from school owing to a scarlet fever scare and how he used the time to create all kinds of ruckus for the normally qjiet English community in which he lives. The principal flavor of “The Magnet” is comic, an ironic and carefree kind of comedy in which the Eng lish indulge with contagious relish. * * * * Michael Balcon is the producer and T. E. B. Clark the author of "The Magnet” and they have found a bright broth of a boy to play their wrae-eyed hero. His name is William Fox and he is another urchin who suggests England is fairly teeming *with eventual successors to Laurence Olivier, RalDh Richardson and the lesser likes of Rex Harrison William plays the son of a busy psvchiatrist. and an attractive witty mother. He, himself, is blessed with an enormous curi osity about the world, knows the sign language used by tramps and can tell you how medicine men cure everythfrom sprained ankles to jungle fever. He is as full of energy and imagination as he is of folk lore and it is these two which mess up his life and the com munity’s rather amusingly in “The Magnet.” It all begins when young Wil liam trades his “invisible watch” for a smaller boy’s magnet on the beach one bright sunny morning. This not very honorable deal fills the picture's boy hero with guilty forebodings and he tries to get rid of the magnet as fast as he can. It keeps coming back to haunt him, however, until he palms it off on a little man who is developing a home-made iron lung. William thinks he is finally rid .. .-. "THE MAGNET.” a J. The little man, it seems, also has an imagination and in his dramatics retelling of how he got the mag net, he converts the lad into a heroic symbol of all generous boy hood. A city-wide search for the lad so the mayor can decorate him is begun, but in William's guilty mind the quest is involved in some way with apprehending him for murder. * * * * As chase movies go. this one directed by Charles Frend is most casually paced. It pauses with no excuse whatever except the drol lery in English movie-makers, sometimes for a beauty contest, to examine William’s guilty dreams and his psychiatrist father’s analysis of them, and even to talk with an old boatman who shaves his legs because he cannot think of anything else to do with his time. These things could be quite a bore if they were not done with such aVtful determination and occasionally they are in spite of it. The most stressed of the inci dental jokes in “The Magnet" is the one relating to the father’s desire to set his son straight mentally. As a jibe at psycho analysis, this jest is built quite effectively around the point that William’s common-sense mother knows more about what is wrong with the boy that his scientific father. “The Magnet” covers a lot of ground with the camera follow ing at the romping heels of its tiero. It introduces movie-goers to a generally agreeable lot of oeople, the best of them played oy Stephen Murray and Kay Walsh as the lad's parents, and KING’S COMPETITOR—An drew Ray, who plays the title role in “The Mudlarjc,” now at the Little, is runner-up to ••King Henry V” as that pio neer art house’s box office champion The film is in its 15th Washington week.
