District Man Indicted
On Murder Charge
In Fatal Slabbing
A man was indicted yesterday
on a charge of first-degree mur
i der, accusing him of fatally stab
| bing another man on April 12.
following an argument in a build
ing where the two men lived in
the 600 block of Massachusetts
avenue N.W.
The defendant, John D. Gift.
33, accused in the death of James
E. Leftwich, 47, was quoted by
police as saying he did not know
what the argument was about—
that he had been drinking.

Miller, 45, colored, of the 1000
block of Twenty-fourth street
N.W., was indicted on a charge
of second-degree murder in con
nection with the fatal shooting
last month of Adam Lockhart,
40, colored, of the 500 block of
Florida avenue N.W. Police
quoted Miller as saying he
shot in self-defense during an
argument and tussle following a
card game.
Marjorie P. Gale, 32, of Alex
andria, was indicted on charges of
embezzling $600 from the Chicken
Hut Restaurant, 427 Eleventh
street N.W., while working there
as a bookkeeDer.
Several persons were indicted on
sex offense charges. Lawrence P.
Garland, 30, colored, of the 1400
block of Q street N.W., was in
dicted on a charge of assault with
intent to rape a 19-year-old col
ored maid in an apartment build
ing in the 4500 block of Living
ston road S.E.
Donald Shipley, 21, of the 100
block of Rhode Island avenue
N.W., was indicted on a charge of
carnal knowledge involving a 14
year-old girl.
Harry L. Burger, 46, listed as
formerly living in the 600 block
of Sixth street N.W., was indicted
on a charge of carnal knowledge
involving a 6-year-old colored girl
The indictments were among a
total of 20 returned by a grand
jury before District Court Judge
Alexander Holtzoff.
Fulcher Named Warden
Of Area 32, Division D
Prank Fulcher was named civil
ian defense warden of Area 32,
Division D, at a meeting of the
Brookland Citizens’ Association
last night.
Edward Coffey was named his
first assistant. Area 32 includes
that part of the Brookland area
north of Kearny street N.E.
The association voted to sus
tain the recommendation of the
Education Committee of the Fed
eration of Citizens’ Associations
to keep the present status of
Wilson Teachers’ College.

School, Tenth and Monroe streets1
