Television
May Make Us
Immobile

Professor Ernest Hooten, the
: Havard anthropologist, recently
chided the television industry
with the prediction that it is go
ing to turn us into a nation of
illiterates, but he was optimistic.
Television stands a fair chance of
making us immobile and obsolete
before we have a chance to be
come merely illiterate.
What is being done in Detroit
is a clear omen of things to come.
Out there a transit strike is in
progress and a large department
store has taken to television to
sell its wares. This is a regular
thing here, to be sure, but ap
parently not on so large a scale
and not with a transit strike to
give it impetus.

[Housewives will discover that it is
| a lot easier to watch a television
set and pick up a telephone than
it is to get dressed and go down
town. Other merchants will have
to follow the first one to the tele
vision salesroom plan. The
butcher (if he has anything to
sell), the baker, the greengrocer,
the fried chicken box man and
every one else will have to go
along.
Before long almost everybody
will be immobile except athletes,
actors, truck drivers, trash col
lectors, die-hard golfers, newspa
permen (who are always over
worked) and newsboys.

In time nobody will go to of
fices except filing clerks. People
who now go to offices and sign
papers will stay at home, examine
the papers by television and ini
tial them by facsimile broadcast
for the filing clerks to file. Roads
and streets will fall into disrepair,
the automobile industry will col
lapse and few people will notice
whether there is a transit strike
or not.
You won’t have to go anywhere.
You will do your work, get your
food and clothing, enjoy your
recreation and entertainment all
by way of a cathode tube in a
box in the living room. Science
is sure to hook television and the
telephone together some day, so
you won't even have to go out to
visit friends and relatives.
Then, some morning, you’ll
wake up feeling a bit under the
weather. You’ll call the doctor.
‘‘H-m-m-m, you do look a lit
tle pale,” he’ll say over the video
phone. “Hold out your tongue
and say ‘Ah.’ Yes,” he will go
on, “you have it, too. Everybody
has it. You need exercise.”
It will be well-meant but ill
considered advice. You may make
it to the front steps, but that’s
as far as you’ll go. If the unac
customed exertion doesn’t get
you. the harsh fresh air and
bright sunshine will. As you sink
to the ground the last sound you
will hear will be a chorus of faint
yelps in the distance. The dogs
will be moving in to take over.
It will be centuries before they
develop communication much be
yond the happy bark and angry
growl.

Programs and People: Four of
those CBS radio shows being pre
pared for television—“My Friend
lima,” “My Favorite Husband,”
the Hal Peary show and “The
Lineup”—have passed the audi
tion stage. The fifth mentioned
awhile back—“Rocky Jordan.”
with George Raft—will turn up
on radio as a summer replace
ment, with television, via film, as
a fall possibility ... A three-star
parlay is lined up for “Four Star
Revue” tomorrow night (WNBW
—8), with Eddie Cantor and Fred
Allen joining Jimmy Durante . .
Three new features have been
added to the daily “Bailey Goss
Show” (WMAL-TV—4 p.m.).
They include "The Brain Buster.”
a twin city quiz on Mondays;
“Family Forum,” a discussion of
child-parent problems on Wednes
days and “Family Fetid,” a child
parent quiz show on Fridays . .
A TV version of Booth Tarking
ton's "The Intimate Strangers”
will be the “Television Theater”
play tomorrow night at 9
(WNBW). Peggy Conklin and
Nelson Olmsted will play leading
roles . . . Veteran Actor Fred
Sheiman will star in the comedy,
‘The Devil You Say,” on “Stars
Over Hollywood” tomorrow night
(WNBW—10:30) . . . The Wiere
Brothers, now regulars on the
weekly James Melton show, are
really television veterans. Their
debut was made in England in
1935. Their next TV show was
an appearance with Lillian Gish
and Helen Morgan in New York—
in 1937 . . Ernie Kovacs is the
newest addition to the NBC-TV
schedule seen Mondays through
Fridays at 3:15 (WNBW).
Divot Department: Many a
phony hair-piece is worn in the
TV studios but the one Ben
Ludlow will be wearing this
week will be worn out of
necessity, not vanity. Mr. Lud
low is director of the orches
tra on “Ford Theater" (WNBW—
alternate Fridays, 9 p.m.) and he
and the orchestra will be before
the cameras in ‘‘Peter Ibertson.”
He’ll be bewigged because crew
cuts weren’t the favorite male
style in the “Peter Ibbetson” days.
