Nature's Children

Rhinoceros Viper.
The most beautiful combination
of colors in the world are worn by
the rhinoceros viper, a poisonous
snake. The stout body has a ground
color of rich olive. The bluish head
is decorated with black dots, in
the center is a sooty arrow blotch
pointing forward, the horns are
yellow.
When the viper sheds his old skin
his new colors resemble bright but
terflies, some framed in narrow
lines of black or blue. The entire
upper .surface presents an effect ol
variegated velvet. There is a pale
blue row of nicked oblong blotches
on the back, each traversed by ar
orange-yellow band. The lovely
blue oblongs are set in jet-black
rhombs and these are bordered ir
dark carmine. On the sides are
large upright, ruddy - brown tri
angles, bordered with dull carmine
merged with a narrow line of black
then pale blue.

true vipers, some are slender
bodied with a prehensile tail, al
together arboreal. The rhinoceroi
viper is provided with two long ant
often several smaller horns on thi
snout. The effect is striking ant
awesome. The body scales ari
coarsely keeled and with many o:
the old specimens the keels ari
spiny points. A shed skin is i
prize, though the bristling scale;
can cause scratches. Owing to it;
semi-aquatic habits this viper ii
known as River Jack and avoided
In crawling, when the muscles o
the lower sides are in play, carry
ing the skin forward and backward
you get the idea of a giant cater
pillar. In a cage, when the anima
is coiled, it appears like a night
mare or an artiflcal thing. Thesi
vipers reach a length of 4 feet. Nea:
shedding time the outside colors ari
dull. Afterward the colors are bril
liant.
The most hideously ugly viper li
contrast to the rhinoceros is thi
gaboon whose range is tropica
Africa from Libera to Damaralam
and eastward to the east coast. I
has silvery white eyes and a glass'
stare. There is a specimen at thi
San Diego Zoo.

fangs twice in Kansas City, where
a powerful group called the “Five
Iron Men" reduced itself to three.
Those liquidated were Charles
Binaggio and his lieutenant, Char

his associates.
