. Fire Fans Recall Last Run
\lnD.C. Salute to Horses
District flre-buffs last night re
called the days when old fire
horses were brought out of their
Blue Plains pastures to make
their last run.
1 It was on June 15, 1925. The
last alarm to which the horses
responded was sometime in 1921.
Nobody remembered the exact
date.
Then, according to a meeting of
the buffs last night, Tom, Barney
and Gene eased their way into
harness and hauled a belching
fire-engine east on East Capitol
from the Capitol. The chronicleer
was Deputy Chief Fred Litterel of
the District Department.
"It was simply a staged show,”
he told the Friendship Fire As
sociation in the National Press
Club. "The horses had been in
pasture and were brought back to
stage that last run as a salute
to flrehorses.”
He said he thought the last
alarm to wnlch hones responded,
was in 1921. He was with No. 26
Engine Co. then—"one of the
last companies that had horses.”
The association is composed of
business and professional men
“who never grew up as far as
chasing fire engines is concerned,”
according to Roy A. Wiseman, a
safety engineer for an insurance
company and a distinguished
buff.” He is deputy chief of the
