Dr. Donlon Is Resigning As Cancer Bureau Chief Dr. Charlotte Donlon, director of the Bureau of Cancer Control of the Health Department, is re signing to enter private practice here. Her resignation was effec tive May 1, but she is continuing to serve on a part-time basis until her successor is appointed. She was appointed director of the Cancer Bureau in May, 1949, succeeding Dr. Jay McLean. She has been instrumental in building! the cancer-control registry, a sta tistical file of cancer incidence an< treatment results in the District Dr. Donlon is married to Jame Hughes, Federal Government em ploye. Dr. Donlon formerly was direc tor of radio therapy, Savannal Tumor Clinic, Savannah, Ga. There are more than 7,000 coa mines in the United States. !Gallantry in Action in Korea Wins Decorations for Two D. C. Area Officers Two 27th Infantry officers from Washington and nearby Maryland ■ have been decorated for gallantry 1 in action against the Reds in j Korea, the Defense Department ■ announced late yesterday. Lt. Col. George Dechow, for ■ merly of 2745 Woodley place N.W., i won the First Oak Leaf Cluster to the Silver Star in an engage ment near Haman on the night 1 of December 8-9, while a Silver Star award went to Capt. Rob ert D. Glaser at Silver Spring for his conduct during an attack near Pongdong on November 29. Capt. Glaser’s wife and young son live at 745 North Hampton drive, Sil ver Spring. The outer defenses of Col. De chow’s battalion were penetrated by an enemy attack, the citation read, and artillery fire called for by the colonel failed to halt the advance. Col. Dechow then “risked in tense fire and moved- through the position to co-ordinate the move ment and fire of his men,” the report said. “'Inspiring his men to maximum effort, he conducted a spirited defense that forced the enemy to withdraw.” Col. Dechow’s mother, Mrs. Linda M. Dechow, lives at the Woodley place address. He and his family resided there during three years of duty in Washing ton before he was assigned to a post in Japan two years ago. The colonel’s wife and two children1 are now in Japan. Capt. Glaser advanoed through enemy fire to personally check the company positions after com munication lines were disrupted in an attack. “After assuring himself that everything was under control,’’ the citation said, “he returned to the command post and found it overrun by hostile forces. Firing his weapon with deadly accuracy, he stormed into the hostile ranks, so demoralizing the enemy that they dropped their arms and fled.” Capt. Glaser, who ^as wounded in action in Europe during World War II, Is now in a hospital in Osaka, Japan, his wife said. Re cently she received a letter from him, explaining he had suffered a sprained back. Lourenco Marques, Mozambi 3ue, reports entertaining 23,500 tourists from South Africa and the Rhodesias last year.
