Widow Is Ruled Suicide; Deaths of Two Other Women Under Investigation Here

District coroner, today held up
death certificates In the cases of
two women and Issued a certifi
cate of suicide in the death of
a third.
Dr. MacDonald ruled suicide in
the case of Mis. Eleanor Carroll
Brent Gookin, mother of three
children, who plunged to her
death from the Calvert Street
Bridge Tuesday night.
The 46-year-old woman, who
lived in the 1100 block of Six
teenth street N.W., was identified
by a brother, Benjamin L. Jack
son, of 2900 Woodland drive N.W.
Her body was found on the Zoo
side of the bridge by Park Police.
Widow of Eye Specialist.
She leaves her children, Car
roll, 21, Eleanor, 20, and Rich
ard, 19; her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
B. Lowndes Jackson, and a sister,
Miss Elizabeth Jackson, all of
Washington; also another sister,
Mrs. Courtland Smith of Belmont
Bay, Va, She was the widow of
Dr. Edward Gookin, an eye spe
cialist here.
The body now is at Gawler’s
funeral home, 1756 Pennsylvania
avenue N.W. Funeral services will
be held at St. John's Episcopal
Church, on Lafayette Square, at
3 p.m. tomorrow. Burial will be
in Rock Creek Cemetery.
Dr. MacDonald held up a death
certificate in th& case of Miss
Patricia M. Casey, 25, a staff nurse
at George Washington University
Hospital, who plunged from a
fifth-floor window of the hospital
early Tuesday and died a few
hours later. Dr. MacDonald said
he was holding up the certificate,
pending further investigation of
the case by police. $
Funeral Tomorrow.
Meanwhile he released the body
to the Mattingly funeral home,
131 Eleventh street S.E. Services
will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow
in St. Stephen’s Church, Twenty
fifth street and Pennsylvania ave
nue N.W: Burial will be in Mount
Olivet Cemetery. Miss Casey’s
mother, Mrs. Margaret Casey, a
Weather Bureau employe, was
called to her daughter’s bedside
before the young woman died.
Dr. MacDonald issued a tem
porary certificate of death, but
held up a formal certificate in the
case of Mrs. Lola Duvall, 65, of
1817 Ontario place N.W., whose
body was found in Rock Creek
on the Zoo reservation Tuesday.
The certificate, it was said, was

chemical analysis, to determine if
death resulted from a heart at
tack or from drowning.
Funeral services for Mrs. Duvall
are to be held 11 a.m. Saturday
at the Lee funeral home. Fourth
street and Massachusetts avenue
N.E. She is survived by a daugh
ter, Mrs. Clara V. Emery. Mrs.
Duvall was the widow of William
T. Duvall.

Ridgway Foresees Japan In Anti-Communist Camp

TOKYO, May 17. — Gen. Mat
thew B. Ridgway predicted today
that Japan will ally herself with
“the other nations outside the
grasp of Communism” once she
gets a peace treaty.
The Supreme Allied Commander
also predicted that Communist
nations would try to bar Ja
pan from the United Nations.
He said the Japanese would
have the “sympathy and support”
of other free peoples in their bid
for U. N. membership and added:
“Japan is daily winning the re
spect that will assure such sup
port.”
Gen. Ridg way’s views were in a
message to the fourth annual as
sembly of the United Nations
Association of Japan.
