MacArthur’s proposals—eventual ly will force use of Chiang Kai shek’s Nationalists for an attack on the Communist-held Chinese mainland. Chiang told Frank King. Asso ciated Press general executive, in an interview at Taipeh, Formosa, yesterday that his force could halt Red Chinese aggression in Korea by a body punch to the mainland. Senator Hickenlooper, a mem ber of the Senate Foreign Rela tions Committee, remarked to a newsman that he had been urging this “for a long time.” Senator McMahon, Democrat, of Connecticut, also a Foreign Re lations committeeman, who has Strongly supported the ouster of Gen. MacArthur by President Tru _— _ a t r i 0111 k 11UU, wwwik W v»***v*~»*» - - — •• • “Chiang may have a new lot of soldiers who won’t throw away their guns as they did the last time we supplied them.” Senator McMahon said sarcastically. “I have always said that any effective invasion by Chiang's troops from Formosa would have to be behind American forces.” Lincoln White, State Depart ment press relations officer, said the department had no comment to make on Chiang’s statements. He noted that they involved mat ters on which United States mili tary leaders are now testifying before the Senate committees in vestigating the removal of Gen. MacArthur. The Defense Department also had nothing to say. A spokesman said that as a matter of policy, the department does not comment on statements by the head of a friendly state. Senator Hickenlooper said. ‘‘I think that a diversionary action by the Nationalist Chinese on the mainland of China would pull the pressure off Formosa and also off 'ithe French in Indo-China.” The French have a large force 'battling Communists in Indo 'jChina. ‘‘I think the greatest oppor tunity of the last several years is now for uniting of anti-Commun ist guerrilla forces on the China mainland. “That and the destruction of Red bases in Manchuria should get underway. I think that the State Department will have to come around to this line of think ing because of the force of pub lic opinion and the realization of the situation.” Senator Hickenlooper said an example of the force of public opinion was the recent State De partment action in “shutting off the shipments of strategic mate rials to Red China.” “The department finally has taken steps to cut off this vicious trade because of public opinion,” he said. “So far the Mac Arthur proposals have neither been shaken nor disproved in any way." 0 Mrs. Meyer Receives Americanism Award Mrs. Agnes D. Meyer, wife W Eugene Meyer, chairman of the board of the Washington Post, yesterday was presented a special Americanism award by the Na tional Order of B’nai B’rith for promoting a “better understand ing of Americanism and civic affairs.” The award was given at a Shoreham Hotel luncheon, spon sored by the Independence Chap ter No. 641 of the order. Mrs. Joseph Miller, outgoing chapter president, presented the award. Science Topic Announced Harry B.
