Watch Worker Union
Hears Tobin Praise
U. S. Foreign Policy
The Truman administration is
pursuing a consistent and ef
fective policy against communism
the world over. Secretary of La
bor Tobin declared here yester
day.
In an address to the American
Watch Workers’ Union at the Ho
tel Statler the Secretary decried
recent criticism of the policy and
cited steps taken by this Govern
ment in the Middle EAst, Europe
and Asia to stop Red advances.
Mr. Tobin said that when Rus
sia occupied the northern prov
inces of Iran in 1946 President
Truman demanded that they
withdraw from that oil-rich coun
try under threat of being blasted
out by the thousands of planes
based then in Europe.
Greece and Turkey Cited.
“We stopped the Communists
there,” Secretary Tobin said, “and
we stopped them in Greece and
Turkey. We supplied Greece with
Army engineers and civilian and
economic missions which helDed
the loyal citizens of that Nation
drive the Communist guerrillas
beyond their borders.”
The Secretary said that assist
ance to Turkey helped prevent
Russian acquisition of the vital
Dardanelles and he declared that
aid to Western Europe in the
form of food, clothing, arms and
money has materially strength
ened the anti-Communist coun
tries.
“For 18 month6, despite stren
uous efforts, the Communists have
been unable to pull a crippling
strike in France,” he said.
In Korea, Mr. Tobin added, the
steps taken had to be different
because of different conditions.
He said it was necessary to send
in men, tanks and guns to pre
vent the Communists from tak
ing a position from which they
could attack Japan. Had they
succeeded, he said, a third world
war probably would have ensued.
MacArthur Incident Mentioned.
Without mentioning Gen. Mac
Arthur by name, he criticized the
ousted commander’s proposals for
extending military action and as
serted that the course being fol
lowed is most likely to succeed.
Earlier, the Watch Workers’
Union heard Senator Taft, Repub
lican, of Ohio advocate tariff law
revision which would provide
“peril point” and “escape” clauses.
The Republican leader contend
ed that the Tariff Commission
should be empowered to deter
mine the point at which imports
of foreign goods imperil Ameri
can industry, so that the imports
could be curtailed or stopped.
