Hague Says Zwillman Is Now Democratic Boss in New Jersey By the Associated Press NEW YORK, Sept. 12.—Former Mayor Frank Hague of Jersey City, N. J., said yesterday that Ab ner (Longie) Zwillman “is the boss—the king—he is now the Democratic leader of New Jersey.” Returning from a European trip on the Cunard liner Queeh Elizabeth, Mr. Hague said he would come out of political re tirement “if the party ever so licited my experience of 30 years to drive ‘Longie’ out of the party of our State.” Mr. Hague, who resigned as New Jersey State Democratic leader several years ago, was asked by newsmen why he had waited until now to link Zwillman— named in Senate Crime Investi gating Committee hearings as a gambling and political power—to State politics. Says He Warned People. Mr. Hague replied that during the 1949 municipal election cam paign "I had made known to the people of Jersey City the real as- 1 sociates of Mayor (John V.) Ken-1 ny (of Jersey City)., and they did not believe me.” “I was in hopes that the truth would come out,” Mr. Hague said,! “and here it is—not by Mayor Hague's statement, but by the> Senate Crime Committee.” Won’t Offer Advice. Asked what the Democratic Party ought to do, Mr. Hague re plied: “You shouldn’t ask me that question. You don’t mean to tell me the Democrats are going to follow that kind (the Zwillman kind) of leadership.” In May, 1949, Mr. Kenny de feated a ticket headed by Frank H. Eggers, a nephew of Mr. Hague, j In a typewritten statement dis tributed to newsmen, Mr. Hague said that Zwillman “has become the new leader of the Democratic Party and, because of his financ ing of the party’s campaign, his word is supreme in all matters of policy and patronage affecting the party.” New Housing Scheme Is Launched in Egypt CARIO.—King Farouk has launched a people's housing scheme in which homes and apartments will be built on sites owned by the Egyptian govern ment.
