Newton Star Staff Correspondent SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 19 The American Federation of Labor w'ill present evidence to the United Nations to show that Soviet Russia is engaging in widespread kid naping activities in Western Ger many. Austria and other free countries near the Iron Curtain, j The U. N. will be askefl to inves- | tigate the charges in a resolution to be put before the AFL’s con vention. probably Friday. Irving Brown, chief of the AFL’s European staff said the request will be based on documents now " being collected and checked by his men. He said that the material will show numerous instances in which persons were snatched from their homes and places of business and taken into Soviet territory. Victims Not Identified. Mr. Brown refused to identify the victims in advance of the presentation of the material to the convention, but it was said that some of the kidnaped persons were trade union leaders of Ger many and Austria who are sym pathetic to aims of the free world. The convention resumed its work 1 today after a one-day recess. Oscar Ewing, Federal Security Ad ministration, was speaking today. He will be followed by Secretary of Interior Chapman, Price Direc tor Michael V. DiSalle, and pos sible Robert A. Lovett, the new Defense Secretary, and Vice Pres ident Barkley. Meanwhile, the AFL issued a blunt warning to the Democratic Party not to consider the labor support it has received in recent! years as an automatic “sure thing.” Labor Aims Cited. The warning was issued by James L. McDevitt of Philadelphia, newly selected director of the fed eration’s Labor League for Politi cal Education. Mr. McDevitt, who is president of the Pennsylvania Federation of Labor, said that politicians in either major party who want labor votes can get them only by supporting labor’s aims. “The impression is prevalent,” Mr. McDevitt said, “that our league will support the Democrats no matter what they do. That definitely is not true.” He said the AFL does not wish to be identified with either party and will support candidates who support labor regardless of their party affiliation. Mr. McDevitt refused to predict how the AFL’s support will go in next year’s elections. He said: “We might have to swallow our words.” He indicated, however, the AFL definitely is interested in finding out how Gen. Eisenhower stands on labor and other domes tic issues. Truman Not Mentioned. He spoke kindly of Gov. War ren of California, and said he did not think Gov. Dewey had a chance of getting the Republican nomination. The name of Presi dent Truman wss not mentioned in Mr. McDevitt’s first news con ference. Federation spokesmen have made it clear here that they no longer wish to be identified solely with the Democrats and will end their co-operation with the CIO in political matters. In fact, the general feeling toward the CIO is one of bitterness in conven tion circles.
