Services were held at Christ Episcopal Church. Mr. Carruthers retired in 1947 after 35 years as bursar of the university. He also had served 10 years as city auditor in Char lottesville and formerly was asso ciated with the Albemarle Bank. Born in Loudoun County, Va., Mr. Carruthers received a degree in accounting from Columbian College in the District. He was active in the Kiwanis Club and was a former governor and lieu tenant governor of the organiza tion’s Capital District. His wife, the former Miss Ellie Jordan of Haymarket, Va., died m 1945. A native of Toronto, he had been president of the company since 1935 and was a director of the Canada Permanent Trust Co. and the Consumer’s Gas Co. - - Gen. Liversedge Dies; Hero of New Georgia, Iwo Jima Campaigns Brig. Gen. Harry B. Liversedge, 57, whose men raised the flag on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima, died yesterday at Bethesda Naval Hospital. As a colonel, he commanded the famed 28th Marine Regi ment in the Iwo Jima ac tion. Gen. Liver sedge entered the hospital last September for major surgery. His last assign ment was as di rector of Marine Corps Reserve Gen- Livened m. at headquarters here. Gen. Liversedge’s career as a Marine spanned 34 years, begin ning in World War I and ending during the present conflict in Ko rea. He gained famed in World War II as leader of the 1st Marine Raider Regiment in jungle fight ing at New Georgia and in the Iwo Jima capture. Gen. Liversedge won the Navy Cross in 1943 for his “extraordi-l nary heroism” in the New Georgia campaign, where he led his men in repeated assaults against the Japanese. Won Gold Star After Iwo. The Iwo Jlma campaign pro duced one of the most famous pic tures of World War n, Associated Press Photographer Joe Rosen thal’s photograph of the men of the 28th's Company E raising the Stars and Stripes atop Mount Suribachi. The Iwo Jima action brought Gen. Liversedge a gold star in lieu of a second Navy Cross. A native of Volcano, Calif., Gen. Liversedge was a star ath lete at the University of California when he enlisted as a private *in the Marine Corps. He was com missioned in 1918 and promoted to first lieutenant the next year! while serving with the 5th Brigade in Prance. The Liversedge name was known to sports fans throughout the country during the 1920s when, as a member of the Navy, track squads, he participated in; the 1920 and 1924 Olympics. He had set an inter-collegiate record in the 16-pound shotput while at California and he won third place in the event in the 1920 Olympics. On Championship Teams. Gen. Liversedge played on a number of championship Marine, Corps football teams, including' the famed Quantico teams of 19231 and 1924, at the time one of the best-known in the Nation. Gen. Liversedge played left tackle on that team, which included the famous halfback. Frank Goettke, killed in the Pacific during World War H. He also was a boxing coach in China. After a brief tour of duty with the occupation forces in Japan in 1945, Gen. Liversedge returned to the United States as director of j the 12th Marine Reserve District, < San Francisco. In 1948 he was named assistant division commander of the 1st Marine Division and promoted to brigadier general. After service at Camp Pendleton, Calif, and on Guam, he was named to his last assignment here in June. 1950. He is survived by a sister, Mrs.! Ruette Fessel of Pine Grove, Calif.! Born in Mirabello Monferrato, near here, he was ordained a priest in Sevilla, Spain. In 1893 he was appointed a visitator of the Salesian houses in South America, remaining until 1911. He was elected rector general in 1932 and ran the entire Sale sian organization from the Turin mother house. Cannon, 60. one-time con gressman. professional ball player and criminal lawyer, died in his sleep at his home yesterday. . Admitted to the bar in 1913 when 22. Mr. Cannon went to Congress in 1932 to serve three; terms as a Democrat. Mr. Cannon was a defense at torney in the famous "Black Sox” baseball scandal and still later he was attorney and adviser of Jack Dempsey when the latter was champion. A native of Ironwood, Mich., Mr. Cannon spent his childhood in an orphanage and worked hisi way through Marquette University as an odd jobs man and baseball pitcher. He had tryouts with several major league clubs as a pitcher. Mr. Cannon drew a two-year suspension from law practice in 1928 when he was accused of am bulance chasing. During this per iod he ran for a seat on the state supreme court which had suspend ed him, and although he lost, he polled 100,000 votes. He was the father of Civil Judge; Robert C. Nov. 26.—John Webster Thomas, former presi dent and board chairman of the Firestone Tire & Rubber Co., died at his home here last night. He was 71 last week. A native of nearby Tallmadge and son of a coal miner. Mr. Thomas had a 38-year career with Firestone and became the firm's president in 1932. He was ele vated to chairman of the board in 1942, and four years later re tired, with Harvey Firestone, jr„ replacing him in the post. During retirement Mr. Thomas kept the title of honorary chair man of the board and had an office in the research building of the big plant here. He served as a consultant. In 1945 Mr. Thomas was awarded a gold medal by the American Institute of Chemists for his contributions to the syn thetic rubber program. Although he had complained re cently of pains, the only conces sion to illness he had made was to ride in a taxi instead of march ing with his boys to the stadium in Roanoke Thanksgiving Day for the VMI-VPI football game. He led the 110-piece band in its maneuvers at the annual classic, however. He went to a Roanoke hospital Friday for a checkup. A native of Blacksburg, the son of the late Thomas Franklin Schaeffer and Anna Laura Martin Schaeffer, the band director hail served VPI for 35 years. His father also was employed by VPI and was leader of the “Goose Creek Boys,” as the band was known in the early days of Tech. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Lola B. Hurt Schaeffer; a daugh ter, Mrs. R. Bruce Prouty of Rich mond, and a sister Mrs. Anna Lee Bruner of Tampa, Fla. Dr. W. Wallace Fritz, 81, who organ zed the American College of Neuropathy here in 1908, died Saturday in Elm Terrace Hos pital. A well-known physician and neuropathy specialist. Dr. Fritz organized the pharmaceutical de partment at Temple University ind was dean of the department for three years. He also was pro fessor of anatomy and clinical surgery at Temple. Dr. Fritz was graduated in med icine in 1894 from the old Medico 11hirurgical College. Davis, 94, of Newbury port, the state’s oldest driver, was cleared of any blame today for the ;hree-car accident in which he was nvolved yesterday. His car was one of two side wiped by the third car.
