The action—aimed at forcing a court test of the bylaw—touched off demonstrations by French-speak ing students. Big crowds of Christmas shop pers looked on while 75 students, mostly from the University of Montreal, paraded with placards. The law, passed recently with the support of Archbishop Paul Emil Leger of Montreal, orders closing on Epiphany, January 6; Ascension Day, 40 days after Easter; All Saints Day, November 1, and the Feast of the Immacu late Conception, today. Placards Confiscated. The students moved from store to store in advance of the police squad cars, first picketing at Eaton’s, then at Morgan’s. There the police dispersed the demon strators and confiscated the pla cards. The police said most of the stores which decided to defy the law by remaining open were in the West End shopping district of this predominantly Catholic city. Two officers of the Montreal police commercial squad were as signed to a shopping spree, buy ing items to be used as court ex hibits. The five department stores leading the fight against the law are Eaton’s, Morgan’s Simpson’s, Ogilvy’s and Birk’s. Defiance Shown by Signs. Some retailers showed their de fiance of the legislation by paint ing signs on their windows: “Ferme Samedi—Overt Dimanche” —Closed Saturday, Open Sunday —or “Forced to Close Saturday." Early in the day business and shopping districts were virtually deserted while Catholics attended mass. By mid-morning, however, Christmas shoppers converged in large numbers on the St. Cather ine street stores. Some small concerns also op ened after giving their Catholic employes time to attend the holy day masses. They risked a $40 fine, but expected good business from shoppers given the day off from work. The stores had advertised in the English-language newspapers yesterday. Work on 18fh Street Halts Until After Christmas The District Highway Depart ment has granted a Christmas re prieve to the merchants along Eighteenth street N.W. between K street and Connecticut avenue from the upheaval of street widening operations. A petition from businessmen asking that the work on the west side of the street be postponed so as not to interfere with their Christmas trade had been sent to Commissioner J. Joseph Dono hue. The Highway Department at present Is completing work on the east side of the street, and expects to have It done this week. The roadway is being widened from 30 to 44 feet. 'People's A and B' Dignified Her Act, Lili St. Cyr Says By th« Aisociotad Pran BEVERLY HILLS. Dec. 8 — Six-foot charmer Lili St. Cyr has rested her case without showing a jury the dance she gave at Ciro’s night spot October 19. Sheriff's officers barged into her dressing room that night, con fiscated her brassiere and panties and arrested her on charges of giving a lewd and nude act. The bra and panties were marked “people’s exhibits A and B” in the trial. The blond Lili, a sure, soft-voiced witness, told the jury that the people’s A and B were always on her when she did the dance at Ciro’s. She left the inference that the sheriff’s raiders must be lynx-eyed because they surely saw things she didn’t do and apparently failed to see others that she wore. Lili’s dance, billed as “Inter lude Before Evening,’’ command ed $15 cover charges at some of the desert night spots, but the sheriff’s boys decided it was en tirely too hot for the city. Although contradictory to the testimony of the sheriff’s raiders, Lili’s recital left just a hint that her act might have been tactfully suggestive, but there was a re jbuke for any one who would im i pute to her anything but the : highest of motives. Lili even consented to show her j high-priced lawyer, Jerry Giesler, how she stepped out of a bath tub at Cairo’s into a 6-by-5-foot beach towel held by her colored maid. Dances Thrive on Frowns ' Despite, or because of, the fact that the authorities of Stellen bosch and Cape Town universi ties, South Africa, frown upon dancing, as many as three dances ! often are held at the same time jin the two universities, observers have noted.
