O'Mahoney Asserts Republicans Are 'Using' Eisenhower By th« Associated Press Senator O'Mahoney, Democrat, of Wyoming contended today that Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower is be ing “used” by victory-hungry Re publicans backing him for Presi dent. “I don’t think the general should be used to save either the Republican Party or the Demo cratic Party.” Senator O’Mahoney told reporters. “His job tas commander of North Atlantic de fense forces in Europe) is to save the Nation.” Another Democratic Senator, Humphrey, of Minnesota, who has just returned from Western Europe, said he found people there “very disturbed” by talk that Gen. Eisenhower may run for President. “Nearly everybody I talked to Is hoping Eisenhower will stay in Europe.” Senator Humphrey said. “He symbolizes the commitment of the American people to West ern Europe. several indispensable. "I don’t want to say he Is indis pensable there, but I think his presence in Europe will be of the greatest importance during the cdming year, which will be a year of decision. The great problems of building a successful defense force are just beginning to come to a climax.” Senator O’Mahoney was asked whether he feels Gen. Eisenhower Is being used. He replied: “I think that is the only reason so many Republicans are urging him to run. They think he is a popular figure and that he would w'in. They are willing to take a chance on what his principles are in order to wrin an election.” Eisenhower supporters like Re publican Senators Lodge of Massa chusetts and Duff of Pennsylvania have said they know- the principles for w-hich Eisenhower stands, and that they are convinced the gen eral will be available for the GOP presidential nomination—and win it. Gen. Eisenhower himself has kept publicly silent on whether he w-ill be a candidate, and—for that matter—whether he is a Repub lican. Senator Humphrey said the only presidential candidate with a chance to win in 19&2 will be one pledged to carry out President Truman's “Fair Deal ’ program. Including the hotly disputed civil rights section. Stronger Civil Rights Aimed. Senator Humphrey said he ex pects the winner to be a Demo crat. regardless of whether Mr. Truman runs again. The Minnesotan confirmed re ports that he intends to try to nail an even stronger civil rights plank into the Democratc Party's platform next year than the one he was largely responsible for in the 1948 platform. The 1948 plank added to dssensipn In the party over civil rights and in creased Southern opposition to Mr. Truman as the candidate. Senator Humphrey said he wants next year’s platform to call for easier squelching of Senate debate on civil rights. Dixie Sen ators traditionally have been able to block action on that program by filibustering, or marathon talk ing, against the legislation. The civil rights bills call for, among other things, setting up a fair employment practices commis sion and a Federal prohibition against lynching. Senator Humphrey said the Democrats wouldn’t have a chance to win and "wouldn’t deserve it” If there was any softening of the administration's position regard ing civil rights. ^a sl I Slave to scorchy pans ?
