0 Senator Denies Rumor Omaha Fired Corning As Superintendent A whispering campaign that School Supt. Hobart M. Corning was fired as administrator of tho. Omaha, Nebr., school system be fore coming here was brought into the open today by a defense of Dr. Coming by Senator Butler, Re publican, of Nebraska. Senator Butler, in a letter to C. Melvin Sharpe, president of the Board of Education, branded the stories as false. Mr. Butler is from Omaha where Dr. Corning served as school superintendent from 1940 to 1946. Dr. Corning resigned that position to come to Washington on March 1, 1946. “Without attempting to assess his work in thp Washington schools, or influence the board s decision,” Senator Butler declared, “I feel compelled in fairness to all concerned to set the record straight on this matter.” Term Expires Next March. The Board of Education cur rently is trying to decide whether to reappoint Dr. Corning to the superintendency. His present three - year term expires on March 1. The board’s Personnel Commit tee, which is making an evalua tion of his service as superintend ent, has scheduled another meet ing for 10 a.m. Saturday. Mr. Sharpe said it was hoped the matter could be settled at the meeting and if it was. a special meeting of the full board probably would be called next week. Senator Butler’s letter follows: “It has come to my attention that through anonymous tele phone calls and certain letters that have appeared in the press, a story is being circulated that Dr. Hobart M. Corning was dismissed from his position of superintend ent of schools in Omaha or that he resigned under pressure. This claim is so unfair to Dr. Corning and so contrary to the facts as I know them that I take this means to give the Board of Education and the public the correct infor mation. >0 Pressure to Resign. “Dr. Corning ably served as school administrator in Omaha from September, 1940, to March 1. 1946. It came as a great disap pointment and surprise to the people of Omaha when he an nounced his new contract with the school board of Washington, D. C., and submitted his resigna tion. “At no time to my knowledge was there any pressure on Dr. Coming to resign nor any ma terial criticism of his administra tion of the Omaha school system. Without attempting to assess his work in the Washington schools or influence the board's decision, I feel compelled in fairness to all concerned to set the record straight on this matter. I am sure, Mr. Sharpe that the Dis trict School Board will fairly as sess Dr. Coming's administra tion, free of scurrilous or un founded personal attacks which may have been made upon him.” Penn Turnpike link Given Ohio Legislature Approval By Iht Associated Press COLUMBUS.
