I McKinney Excoriates G.0.P.r CentersAttack On Col. McCormick By the Associated Press CHICAGO, Dec. 14.—Frank E. McKinney, Democratic national chairman, last night defended the administration against charges of 'corruption and charged some cri tics “are undermining confidence in Government.” Mr. McKinney, speaking before more than 2.000 Midwest party leaders at a $100-a-plate fund raising dinner, singled out the Chicago Tribune, the Washington Times-Herald and their editor and publisher. Col. Robert R. Mc Cormick, and Senator McCarthy, Republican, of Wisconsin for at tack. * “At the Chicago Tribune,” Mr. McKinney said, "they sit up all night figuring out new ways to sneer at our Government’s pro gram for world peace. And in Moscow, Vishinsky stays up all night, too, laughing at our Gov ernment’s plan for world disarma ment. “Perhaps the reason he laughs is that he thinks our Nation is really as it appears in the twisted columns of the Chicago Tribune.” Accuse Each Other. Mr. McKinney said “Col. Mc Cormick, like Joe Stalin, wants the United States to withdraw its moral and physical support from Europe and permit that workshop of freedom to drop into the lap of communism.” Commenting on Mr. McKinney s speech, Col. McCormick said "tne Tribune during the last two days has shown McKinney up as a crook. He has tried to muddy the; water by telling lies about the' Tribune and me. "I’m not going to pay any atten tion to his lies, but I’m going to continue to show up his corruption and that of the administration.” The Tribune attacked McKinney in connection with a stock deal in which the Democratic chairman made $68,000 profit on a $l,000i investment. Mr. McKinney acknowledged that he had purchased stock in a Philadelphia tractor company, now in bankruptcy, from Prank Cohen, and sold it back to Mr. Cohen 11 months later at a high profit. Mr. McKinney said, however, there was nothing "shady” in the deal, and that Cohen bought the stock back at such a high figure because he wanted to get control of the firm before selling out to a South Amer ican firm. Mr. McKinney said the deal later fell through. “Scuttle” Tactics Charged. Mr. McKinney accused some Republican leaders of "scuttle and run" actics. "They are disciples of doubt— trying to sneak into office in a cloud of negative criticism," he charged. “In their frenzied scramble for power they are resorting to tac tics which are undermining con fidence in government.” He asserted that a “campaign of fear and smear” is "making decent patriotic men and women hesitant about entering Govern ment service,” And charged the present-national campaign is be ing waged similarly to that in Maryland in which John M. But ler, Republican, last year unseated Millard E. Tydings, veteran Dem ocratic Senator. In the Maryland campaign, he said, a "fraudulent newspaper” which printed a “fake photo graph” of Senator Tydings appar ently in friendly conversation with Communist Earl Browder "was in spired by Senator McCarthy and was printed—at cost or below cost —in the plant of the Washington Times Herald—which is owned by Col. Robert McCormick and pub lished as the Washington edition, of the Chicago Tribune.” “Was that ethical?” Mr. Mc Kinney asked.” .Maryiana campaign nrougnt up. He said some Republican leaders see in the Maryland campaign of last year "a blueprint for victory in 1952.” In Los Angeles Senator Mc Carthy said the Gillette Senate committee, currently investigating Senator McCarthy's activities, hasj indicated there is no evidence hej had anything to do with the al-j leged "fake photograph” of Mr. Tydings. Mr. McKinney charged that if Chicago voters "Had to rely upon the Chicago Tribune as their only source of news—then they would be as badly misinformed as those unhappy millions behind the Iron curtain—where truth is a bootleg commodity.” “There is more than one simi larity between the Tribune and the Russian mouthpiece. Pravda,” Mr. McKinney continued. “Both of them edit the news to fit the party line. “Moreover, these lines are ; sometimes parallel. Both Blame Truman. “When Russia breaks a prom ise, Joe Stalin blames the United States and Harry Truman. So does the Chicago Tribune. "When Russia precipitates a world crisis, Stalin blames the United States and Harry Truman. So does the Chicago Tribune. “When Russia starts a shoot ing war, Stalin blames the United States and Harry Truman. So does the Chicago Tribune.” penman NOT ONLY RELIEVES BUT ‘LOOSENS UP’ warns CAUSED BY COLDS Thousands of doctors prescribe this | famous modern cough medicine. pertussin increases natural secre ! tions and acts at once to relieve such coughing. Generally they have been sell ing at prices below even the new ceiling. Yesterday’s Office of Price Stabilization orders: 1. Rolled back cattle hide ceil ings 5 cents a pound below levels set in an order issued last March 15. 2. Reduced calfskin ceilings about 18 per cent, a cut of 10 to 15 cents a pound below last March. 3. Withdrew a 15 per cent in crease in ceiling prices granted manufacturers and wholesalers of soft surface floor coverings last March 12. This restores the gen eral freeze ceilings of last January 26 for carpeting and rugs made of wool, synthetics or a combination of both. Cotton rugs are not affected by the order. The OPS said its action was possible be cause of falling wool prices.
