Take My Word for It
By Frank Colby
Julius Caesar, in 46 B. C„ revised
the calendar, and made January
the first month of the year. It was
not until the 17th century, however,
that Scotland and England made
January 1 the first day of the New
Year. Our celebration of this day
is, therefore, a modem custom.
January was named for the Ro
man deity, Janus, the god of doors
and gates. He was represented as
having two faces, one fore and one
aft, which symbolized the fact that
a door faces in two directions.
Janus, therefore, was said to pre
side over the beginnings of all hu
man enterprises.
Throughout the world New Year’s
day is associated with special foods,
which are supposed to bring luck
through the entire year.
In northern Europe the special
food is a meal cake made'from the
first grain. Pancakes are a special

on this day in France; tossed on a
griddle, they will bring good luck.
Among certain American Indians,
the New Year was associated with
the salmon run and the ripening of
acorns, and was held in July and
August. They made a ceremony of
eating thse foods at the New Year
festival.
Only new foods are eaten in India
on New Year’s. The boiling of new
rice will bring good luck during the
coming year, and rice cakes are
used as offerings in Ceylon.
In America, in spite of the ela
orate banquets, dinners and feasts,
some strange traditions still are very
much alive. In the South good luck
is believed to follow all persons who
eat black-eyed peas on New Year’s
day. And strange as it may seem,
this custom, with the help of a bit
of commercial boosting is fast
growing in popularity throughout
America.
