The British Broadcasting Co. announced the King’s death at li:16 (6:16 am. EST) and then closed down for the day except for news and shipping broadcasts. Parliament, in the midst of a bitter foreign affairs debate, was expected to adjourn after meeting to formally express its sympathy to the royal-family. Soccer matches, one a cup final similar in this country to the United States baseball World Series, probably will be called off. Theaters throughout the nation Law courts also closed. The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Goddard, his wigged head bent In sorrow, ordered the closing after an nouncing: “I have some terrible news. The {King died this morning.” ! Prime Minister Winston Church 111 quickly called a cabinet meet ing. The first BBC announcement interrupted a school children's program. The announcer said: ! “This is London. I “It is with great sorrow that we make the following announce ment “It was announced from Sand ringham at 10:45 today, February 6, 1952, that the King, who retired to rest last night in his usual health, passed peacefully away in his sleep early this morning. “The BBC offers its profound sympathy to Her Majesty the Queen and the royal family. “The BBC is now closing down for the rest of the day except for advertised news bulletins and summaries, shipping forecasts and gale warnings. “Further announcements will be made at 11:45. 12 o’clock and 12:15.” Silence followed. The London stock and commod ity exchanges closed at noon. There was no trading on the Lon don metal exchange. In Paris, United Nations Secre tary General Trygve Lie ordered the lowering of the flags of the world organization’s 60 nations, .who yesterday concluded their sixth General Assembly. : Mr. Lie sent a telegram to Brit ish Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden expressing his “profound sorrow" at the monarch’s death. ! At Gen. Eisenhower’s SHAPE j headquarters outside Paris the flags of Britain and the 11 other Atlantic pact nations were low ered as soon as the news was re ceived. | In the West German capital of Bonn flags were lowered on alii public buildings. News of the King's death interrupted Chan cellor Konrad Adenauer at a meeting at the chancellory. Queen Juliana of the Nether lands was “deeply shocked," her secretary at Soestdyk Palace said. Denmark’s broadcast system in terrupted a program of light music to announce the death, then began playing solemn music. In the Indian capital of New Delhi, officials said tomorrow probably would be declared a day of mourning. Prime Minister Nehru told the Indian parliament, the news was “a surprise and shock. I am sure the house will deeply sympathize with Her Majesty the Queen, Prin cess Elizabeth and the people of England with whom the King was so popular. "It is significant in this world of republics how the British Royal House stood firm, not merly in law, but In the affections o£ the people,” Mr. Nehru said. Pope Pius was informed by Wal ter St. C.
