Emily Post on Etiquette In referring to office practice, lie following question would be uite normal, but concerning a rivate house, it is very strange ideed:- “Is it wrong to write lersonal’ on the envelope of a ery personal letter to a member f a large family? I have received uch letters and no one in my imily has taken offense. But the lother of the girl I sent such a itter to is insulted. Since I didn’t now the others in the family very ell, I thought it quite all right ecause I know that in many fam ies letters sent to one are con idered family property.” It seems impossible that any one ould think of opening a letter ddressed to any other member f the family. In’ other words, iiere should be no necessity for utting “personal” on an envelope, o fact, I wonder if any one who would think of reading another’s letter would be deterred by the word “personal.” i Reason for Refusing Invitation Dear Mrs. Post: Is it necessary to explain the reason tor having to refuse an invitation? Answer: To a very intimate friend you would say, “I’m sorry, but I am lunching with Mary,” or “We are going to the Joneses.” To some one you know only slightly, you say regretfully, "I’m so sorry I have another engage ment.” If Decorative—Yes Dear Mrs. Post: Is it in bad taste to have 'fcmpty vases dis played in the living rom? Answer: Ordinary flower con tainers should be kept in the closet until filled with flowers. But vases that have decorative value of their own are used with or without flowers. How Many Guests? Dear Mrs. Post: What is you: opinion of using paper plates and napkins at a wedding anniversary celebration? Answer: Of course linen nap kins and china or glass plates are to be preferred, but when a suf ficient number of these would be out of the question, the substitu tion of paper items is acceptable Remember letters are word pictures of you and should be written with the greatest of care. Mrs. Post is sorry she cannot answer personal mail. However, her booklet No. 502. “Letter Writing,” includes de tails on how to improve the ap pearance of letters.
