Kiner Asks More Pay, j Ejects Pirates'Boss Will Be Agreeable ly th* Associated Press PITTSBURGH, Peb. 8.—Ralph Kiner, Pirates left-flelder whose booming home-run bat makes the turnstiles click at Forbes Field, wants more money. Kiner talked to the Pittsburgh Post-Gaaette last night from his new home in Palm Springs, Calif., and declared: “I am going to ask for more money and I don’t expect to have any trouble getting it. I talked with John Galbreath (Pirates’ president) at the World Series. We were pretty well agreed on What I’ll receive in 1952,’’ Kiner, who reportedly has drawn $65,000 a year on a two-year pact which expired after last season, wouldn’t indicate Just how much of a raise he wants. However, the slugger who belted 42 homers last year, added. “I might see John in New York to get straightened out. Otherwise, I'll probably see him early in March.” Kiner will be in New York with his wife, the former Nancy Chaf fee, when she defends her Na tional Indoor Singles tennis title this month. He expects to return to California and then be ready to start spring training with the Bucs at San Bemadino March 3. Yankees Sign Over mi re, Three Rookie Hurlers NEW YORK, Feb. 8 (if).—The Yankees announced today the signing of four players, all pitch ers. They are Jim McDonald and Dick Carr, right-handers, and 8tubby Overmire and Art Sohal lock, left-handers. Overmire, at 32, is the veteran of the quartet. None of the other three has seen a full season in majors. McDonald, a promising 24-year old fast bailer, was acquired from the Browns last fall in exchange for Clint Courtney, rookie catcher.. He won only four and lost seven with the tail-end Browns, but all his victories were against the top j three teams in the league. He whipped the Yankees twice. > 1 Basketball (Continued From Page C-l.) | 67-63. despite Tommy O’Keefe’s , play for the hosts. The team that' was runnerup to Kansas State in the Western NCAA finals last year received probably a fatal blow to its 1952 hopes last nigljt in losing to Tulsa, 46-33. It was the first. Tulsa victory over the Aggies in 11 years. It also was the Aggies’ second defeat in Missouri Conference competition and gave St. Louis, unbeaten in league play, an ap parent strangehold on the league crown. The Missouri Conference winner automatically qualifies for the Western NCAA eliminations. Meantime, unbeaten St. Bona venture continued on its way to its much-heralded Monday’s meeting with Duquesne by whip ping Murray State of Kentucky. 74-63. The Dukes and the Bon nies are the only major unde feated teams in the Nation. In chalking up their 15th straight the Bonnies spurted in the closing minutes after Murray pulled up to 62-60. Then quick baskets by Paul Noland and Leo Corkery gave the Bonnies, ranked 4th in this week’s Associated Press poll, a safe 10-point lead. Dick Groat helped Duke come from behind in the last quarter to beat William and Mary, 68-62, in the Southern Conference. Groat scored 11 of his 24 points in the rally that erased a nine point Duke deficit. It was Duke’s sixth In a row._ Tourney Dales to Be Set At Golf Meeting Tonight The District Golf Association will install officers and assign in vitation tournament dates at its annual meeting, preceded by a dinner, at 6:30 tonight at In dian Spring. With Bill Leetch Dr. R. W. Eschmeyer, executive vice president of Sport Fishing institute and one of the Nation’s top fish conservationists, says if some one had suggested 10 years igo that a major problem in fish conservation was to teach people low to fish, many biologists would lave scoffed at the idea However, a recent study hy Maryland’s biologists showed that 10 per cent of the anglers caught 16 per cent of the fish and more than a third of the fishermen caught no fish at all. Iowa and Dhio have released publications telling how to fish the waters of heir States. West Virginia has a project under way to teach citi sens how to catch more bass from its 3,000 farm ponds. Several States have recognized the fact that a very large segment of our ashing population doesn’t know tiow to catch fish. According to Dr. Egchmeyer, most fish management men today recognize the need for educating people not dnly in fish conserva tion, but in the art of »ngHng itself 72 Florida Ava. N.E.
