Robber Sentenced foi
Crabbing $255 Cash
A man was sentenced yesterday
by District Court Judge Luther
W. Youngdahl to serve from four
to twelve years for grabbing $255
from a cash box of the Eastern

Pennsylvania avenue 6.E., last
November.
The man given the time is Ru

Sentence was on the specific

pleaded guilty. Police said he
grabbed the money after going
to a counter of the association
and asking for change. He was
caught nearby after a chase. Wil
son has a long criminal record,
the court was informed.
Judge Youngdahl gave several
ethers long prison terms for dif
ferent offenses. He sentenced
Louis M. Hicks, 43, colored, of
the 2200 block of Virginia avenue
N.W., to serve from four to twelve
years, and a co-defendant, Sam
uel M. Jones, jr., 34, colored, of
the 800 block of Twenty-second
street N.W., from three to nine
years for breaking into a George
Washington University fraternity

Another 3*to-9-Year Term.
In another housebreaking case,
Judge Youngdahl gave Benjamin
P. Johnson, 32, colored, of the
1300 block of Twelfth street N.W.,
three to nine years, for breaking.
into the room of a colored woman
in the 1200 block of Eighth street
N.W.
Judge Youngdahl gave How

more, 3 to 9 years for assault with
intent to commit carnal knowl
edge involving a 14-year-old col
ored girl.
In a sentence on Thursday
Judge Youngdahl gave Harold W.
Tyler, 30. colored, of the 1100
block of Ninth street N.W., from
5 to 15 years for breaking into a
room in the 1500 block of Vermont
avenue NW.
In another sentence yesterday,
District Court Judge Edward A.
Tamm gave Richard H. Osborne,
20, of the 600 block of F street
N.W., from 3 to 9 years for the
defendant’s part in a $10 robbery
of a cab driver. Last month,
Joseph A. Wagstaff, 27, a co
defendant in the robbery case,
was given from 6 to 21 years for
the robbery and for carrying a
pistol.
Narcotics Case Sentence.
Judge Tamm gave James E.
Tatum, 26, colored, of the 1100

6 months to 2 years yesterday on
a narcotic charge and •recom

narcotic addiction.
Mrs. Alice V. Jackson, 48, col

DiSalle Charges Critic
Of Curb on Potatoes
With Pressure Tactics
ly fh» Atsociottd Prm
Price Director Michael V. Di
Salle has fired back at one of his
sharpest critics, Executive Secre
tary Whitney Tharin of the Na
tional Potomac Council,
i In a letter to Mr. Tharin, re
leased yesterday, the retiring Of
fice of Price Stabilization chief
I accused him of having “rendered
a disservice to your Nation.” He
contended Mr. Tharin used pres
sure tactics in opposing OPS ceil
ings recently imposed on white
potato prices.
Mr. Tharin, who says he has
sent nine communications to Mr.
DiSalle, has accused him of by
passing the law. Congress and the
potato business in setting maxi
mum prices. “We marvel at your
seeking a seat in the United States
Senate,” Mr. Tharin told him.
Mr. DiSalle. who is resigning to
run for the United States Senate
in Ohio, replied that OPS offi
cials talked with Congress mem
bers, potato growers and others
before issuing the order. If elect
ed to the Senate, Mr. DiSalle
added, he would be guided by
“common sense, reason and logic
rather than invective, personali
ties and ridicule.”
Meanwhile, OPS had planned
to issue an order today granting
a price increase to cover the cost
of washing old crop potatoes, but
the action was put off to Monday.
An official said the allowance
probably would be about 20 cents
per 100 pounds.
Chelf Says Prayer on His Wall
Will Guide Justice Investigation
By th« Anociattd Prm
Hanging on a wall in the office
of Representative Chelf, Demo
crat, of Kentucky is this printed
“Daily Prayer”:
“Dear Lord: Teach me to keep
my big mouth shut until I know
what I am talking about, and
deliver me from blabbing what
little I do know.”
The prayer, Mr. Chelf said to
day in an interview, will be a guide
in the forthcoming investigation
of the Justice Department by a
House committee of which he is
chairman.
Mr. Chelf said he and the six
others on the committee—three
Democrats and three Republicans
—are agreed they will conduct no
“witch hunt” and “go on no fish
ing expeditions.”
“We are going to proceed on the
good American premise that a
man is innocent until proven
guilty,” he said. “We are going
to stick to the facts or what we
believe to be credible evidence, and
are not going overboard on hear
say or mere suspicion.”
Mr. Chelf emphasized the com
mittee is "more interested in mak
ing a thorough investigation than
it is in getting headlines.”
“And if we find no wrongdoing
we are going to say so,” he added.
“If we find corruption, we are not
going to whitewash it or try to
smooth it over.”
The 44-year-old World War n
major is no newcomer at investi
gations. For many years before
coming to Congress eight years
ago he was a prosecuting attorney
in Kentucky.
All on the committee are law
yers and are members of the
House Judiciary Committee, which
ordered the investigation after
disclosure of scandals in the In
ternal Revenue Bureau by a Ways
and Means subcommittee.
The Ways and Means group
branched its inquiry into the Jus
tice Department’s tax division
That’s when the demand rose for
a full probe of that agency.
At its first meeting Thursday
the Chelf Committee agreed on a
“no politics” course and decided
to consult the American Bar As
sociation and the District of Co
lumbia Bar Association before se
lecting a counsel.
Seeks Ex-FBI Men.
It also determined to try to re
cruit its investigators from the
ranks of former FBI men, of
whom there are many.
“It’s these men that we want
for investigators,” he said- “We
don’t want any one with political
ambitions.”
The committee yesterday ap
pealed to FBI Director J. Edgar
Hoover for help in locating and
getting the men wanted. Mr.
Hoover promised to furnish a list
of names.
The committee will have ample
funds, probably up to $100,000, as
a starter.

A Washington man was acci

It went off,” Corpl. Morris said.
He enlisted in June, 1948 and
was sent to Korea as a truck driv

being shot, Corpl. Morris was

Morrises have no children.
Marine Corps S/Sergt. George
D. Atkinson, who served through
Guam, Guadalcanal and other
Pacific campaigns in World War
n without being hit, was wounded
slightly in the leg by shrapnel in
Korea.
“They didn’t even take him to
the hospital,” his wife Betty of
1623 North Oak street, Arlington,
said, “just to the battalion aid
post. He was expected to be back
in action before long.”

Capehart Recommends
Rise in Civilian Output
Uy the Associated Prow
The answer to any growing un
employment civilian production,
says Senator Capehart, Repub
lican, of Indiana, is a bigger out
put of civilian goods.
Senator Capehart wrote Defense
Mobilizer Charles E. Wilson yes
terday that he believes, for the
time being at least, enough ma
terials have been tabbed for the
military. He called for “an over
all review’’ aimed at boosting con
sumer production.
Alternatives like shifting some
defense work to job-scarce areas—
as ordered by Mr. Wilson earlier
this week—and bigger unemploy
ment compensation, are only stop
gap measures, he contended:
Senator Capehart is the senior
Republican on the Senate-House
Defense Production “Watchdog"
Committee.
