Narcotics Conspiracy
Indictment Expected
Soon, Irelan Says

ing narcotics conspiracy is ex
pected to be returned by the spe
cial District crime grand jury
within the next two weeks, United j
States Attorney Charles M. Irelan;
* announced yesterday.

racketeer in the city is known,

Lower Bond Denied.
Mr. Wadden’s announcement
followed rejection by District
Judge Henry A. Schweinhaut of
a plea by Joseph Smith, alias
Peter Rabbit, for a reduction in
his SIO,OOO bond. Smith was
arrested in a narcotics raid last
week.
Attorneys for Smith had asked
a reduction to $2,500 or $5,000.
But after Mr. Wadden told Judge
Schweinhaut that Smith was re
garded as being “the second or
third” biggest dope operator in
the city the jurist refused to
lower the bond.
The information as to Smith’s
status in the drug racket was
given by “a person in the nar
cotics trade” Mr. Wadden told
the judge.
The special grand jury con
tinued to stress narcotics in its
session yesterday. Five witnesses
were interrogated, with only one
of them testifying as to gambling,
Mr. Wadden said.

They plan to build a “park of
marvels” around the villa where
Pinocchio was born. The villa is at
Collodi, in Tuscany, where the
writer of Pinocchio. Carlo Loren
rini, lived and died. The plan is to
transform the villa into a dream
land public park where children
can trace Pinocchio’s adventures.

Still No Successor to Choi
in Mongolia, Reds Indicate

MOSCOW, Mar. 4.—The Mos
cow press indicated today that

still has not chosen a premier to
succeed the late Marshal Choi

The marshal’s death, from

Newspapers today published a
pledge of “eternal loyalty and

Mongolian legislative assembly.

premier heading the government.

candidate to succeed Choi. He

Unearthed in Iraq

CAIRO.—An American geologist
has uncovered granite and vol
canic glass articles believed to
have been made 25,000 years ago
in the North Iraqi mountains, the
Arab News Agency reported from
Baghdad.
The scientist, Prof. Ralph Sol
iski, started excavations in the
