Man Gets Life Term in Assault On Befhesda Girl, 14 Robert Byrd, 35, formerly of the 600 block of L street S.W. was sentenced to life imprison ment yesterday in Circuit Court in Rockville-on a charge of as sault with intent to rape a 14- year-old Bethesda girl. In reply to Byrd’s last minute plea for leniency. Judge Charles W. Woodward declared: “The only problem in my mind is whether to have you hanged or igive you life imprisonment ... I am giving you leniency when I sentence you to prison for the rest of your natural life.” Identified by Victim. Byrd was found guilty last Fri day by Judge Woodward after the attractive victim identified him in court. The high school girl, in soft spoken tones, testified Byrd threatened her with a knife, knocked her down and tried to assault her last July in a wooded area off Surrey avenue, about six blocks from Wisconsin avenue. Byrd wan arrested the day after the attack on a construction job near the scene. The young girl identified him by white splotches on his chest. A pair of tennis shoes also were used te connect him with the crime. Sanity Plea Overruled. A plea of insanity was over ruled by Judge Woodward last Friday. Yesterday Byrd told the court he was the sole support of his mother as he pleaded again and again for clemency. Robert Meyers, of Rockville, attorney for Byrd said the de fendant never had an opportunity to learn right from wrong and the seriousness of his crime. Mr. Myers said the colored man has been excluded from places where he could learn accepted standards of society and should not be held accountable for his actions in the same degree as a white man. Judge Woodward, noting the age of the victim had no bearing on the case said to Byrd: “The crime you have committed is as bad a crime as can be com mitted. No man who did what you did ought ever to walk the streets as a free man again.” - Hibernians' Choice HOLLYWOOD, Mar. 14 (^Pi.— The choice of the Irish is Dublin born Maureen O’Hara. "In my opinion,” Mr. Busbey said in a floor speech yesterday, “any delay w completing the cemeteries is false economy be cause the longer we delay the con struction program, the greater the cost will be to the taxpayers.’ He pointed out that the Govern ment had refused t<* let piivate organizations erect memorials in American cemeteries overseas, of fering, instead, the assurance fl at the United States would provide suitable monuments. He called on the Government to live up to its promise. Mr. Busbey also urged that photographs be made of the graves at Government ixpense end rent on request to relatives of dead servicemen who cannot afford to visit abroad. A total of 124,153 graves now are under jurisdiction of the American Battle Monuments Commission, Mr. Busbey reported. Os these, 301908 are World War J graves and 93,245 are World War 11.
