THE EVENING STAR, Washington, D. C. MOKPAT. MARCH SI. MM B-10 * The Passing Show Actresses Exciting in 1952 Even if Plays Were Not Regardless of the apathy with which they approach the prospect of selecting the year’s best play on Broadway, the critics can get excited over the questionn of best actress. They have thrown their hats in the air over any number of feminine performers; more of them than in almost any recent year. Among these are Jessica Tandy,* 1 Julie Harris, Audrey Hepburn, | Leora Dana, Helen Hayes, Vivian ] Segal, and that other Vivienne, j Leigh, whose' pair of Cleopatras j unquestionably is the tour de force of the drama season. It is generally a new play, however, j that makes an actress seem most ] exciting, and this may impede , Miss Leigh in adding Broadway’s j laurel wreaths to her Hollywood Oscar. If the enthusiasm of first re- \ views sustained itself until bal loting time, this year’s Best actress ' contest might be regarded as sim- , merihg down to two performers. These would be Miss Harris, who plays the amoral heroine of John ! Van Druten and Christopher Isherwood’s "I Am a Camera,” . and Miss Hepburn, who imper- 1 senates the calculating, comic 1 young virgin in “Gigi.” The notices for each of these 1 were approximately ecstatic, and 1 Miss Harris was raised to stardom < as a result of the critical fervor ' for her performance. * *** * 8 Os the others, Miss Tandy is no * less than brilliant as the wife in the two-character comedy, “The Pourposter,” yet for all the satis faction with which her perform- j ance has been greeted, it car- ; lies less of an element of sur- . prise. The same is true of Miss ; Hayes in “Mrs. McThing ” Mary Coyle Chase’s fantasy which was planned merely as an Anta sub scription play and turned into one of the season’s most popular hits. If any of the older performers ! inspires an election-day rout of ; the tender young, it is more likely ! to be Miss Segal. Her return to ] her original "Pal Joey” role, that ; of the Society wife with the in- ; stincts of a Moll, after 12 years, is the sensation of Times Square’s season. In a cast full of the glow ing young, Miss Segal takes over with the immaculate touch of the perfect artist of musical comedy. As for Miss Dana, she is a de light in “Point of No Return,” : but she may well be lost in the shadows of such other performers : as Henry Fonda, Bob Ross and John Cromwell in Paul Osborn’s predominately masculine play. Among the males, the competi E MORRISON PAPER Ca i 1009 PcwuL Avs. N.W. moj/cilAßiin k \| | Dianes #1 I Filing Supplies J) j [w\ Lmh Leaf V v Ami AB V Office Soppfies Phone NA . 2945 tYou'v# found It at lautl A slenderizing iy*t«m that not only keeps its promts* - but gives you a written guarantee! The booking was announced today by Ballet Theater and Richard Al drich and Richard Myers, new op erators of the National. A comparative certainty for the summer, however, is a one-week (at least) booking on “Don Juan in Hell.” The triumphant Shaw work, sensation of the last two seasons in New York and on the road, played a capacity one-night stand at Constitution Hall last year. Its return engagement will have the same cast, Charles Laughton, Charles Boyer, Sir Cedric Hard wicke and Agnes Moorehead. There, Frederico Ray and Pilar Gomes danced a gay and varied program of Spanish and Latin American traditional and folk numbers under the auspices of the Hayes Concert Bureau. Senor Ray and Senora Gomez have de signed their concert with an eye more to giving pleasure than to electrifying audiences. This is a sound idea and it is carried out adeptly. Two dancers, of course, consti tute the barest minimum of folk and this is never the best number for achieving the full flavor of communal spirit as expressed in the dance. Senora Gomez and Senor Ray, however, are talented performers and are impressive enough in substituting quality for quantity in their dancing. Highlight of their program yes terday was a Basque Suite cover ing a range of moods suggesting the Basques are an old and vig orous people who are proud of their traditions. Also suggested in the several solo and duet num bers of this suite is the fact that the Basques are a zestful, acro batic lot with an earthy sense of humdr. * A more dramatic on the pro gram is a Gypsy number, "Love, the Magician,” in which the dancers tell the passionate story of a beautiful girl held in the thrall of her dead lover until she invokes fire to break the evil spell. Silvio Masclarelll is the tal ented piano accompanist of Senor Ray and Senora Gomez. Aiming 'Rifle' HOLLYWOOD.
