English, work was hard to find. He
worked as a dishwasher and at other
odd jobs.
Autumn of ’49 was In the air when
he asked a policeman, a “big Irish
fellow,” where he could find a Job.
“I know a place, me boy, where they
have permanent Jobs with good fu
tures,” the officer said. He directed
Carl to an Army recruiting station.
What did he have to lose? He signed
up for three years.
A year later, his outfit sailed for
Korea. Last January, he came back
after months of active duty. He soon
will be transferred to Camp Sheridan,
near Chicago, to do special military
police work. In September, he intends
to re-enllst.
“Life in the American Army is good,”
he says. With his sights set on an
Army career, he also intends to be
married soon after his transfer.
But another event—almost as Joyous
—also is in the offing. His mother,
whom he last saw in *4B, soon will arrive
in New York. When she, Alfrieda.and
Carl meet again it will have been 20
years since they all have been together.
