Sur geon General Leonard A. Scheele said yesterday. Dr. Scheele, speaking to Dis trict Shriners at the Sphinx Club, said even though most mul tiple sclerosis cases have periods of improvement, “there is no form of treatment at present that will surely result in arrest ing” the disease or restoring the patient to health. “The patient,” Dr. Scheele said, “always has before him the prospect of a life of total and permanent disability.” The doctor told Shriners they have a wonderful opportunity to help the multiple sclerosis patients in this community and asked them to tell the story throughout the city of the crip pling disease. The local chapter of the Na tional Multiple Sclerosis Society is currently staging its first fund raising campaign. The disease, according to doc tors, seems to strike at the pro tective sheath around nerve fibers. Often the diease eats away these fibers, thereby affecting impulses carried to muscles.
