SUNDAY, APRIL IS. 1903 Stocks Follow Narrow Range In Week, With Volume Lower By Rader Winget NEW YORK, April 18.—The stock market traded within a relatively narrow range this week on diminished volume. Those who expected the mar ket to break out with a quick rise or a hard fall were disap pointed. Many had expected that, and they were able to give convincing reasons for their opinions. But the market went on its own way. Business transacted on the New York Stock Exchange al ways is a good indication of the temper of price trends. On Monday it declined, and the next two days it went up That was exactly the same trend as the previous week. In the' final two days this week the market con tinued to follow the pattern of the previous week and declined. This is the fourth straight week that the Associated Press average of 60 stocks has re treated. This week it lost 60 cents and stood at $lO9 when the market closed Friday. At that point the average now is only 30 cents away from the low of the year reached a week ago Monday. The level is about equal with mid-November of last year, when the market was in the midst of the Eisenhower boom. Wall Street was well aware of the steadily increasing cost of money always a deflationary factor. Chase National Bank increased its rate on brokers’ loans to 3 per cent from 2% per cent. National City Bank increased its rate on short-term loans on securities to 2\' 2 per cent from 2*4 per cent. And there was a general increase to 2*2 per cent from 2% per cent in the prime rate on commercial paper—gilt-edged loans. Pepsi-Cola was the most ac tive issue this week on the New York Stock Exchange, off */ 8 at 14%, with 111,500 shares traded. It was followed by Niagara Mohawk Power, up */ 8 at 27*4; Pacific Western Oil, off 4*/ 8 at 38; Libbey, McNeill & Libby, off */ 4 at 9%, and United States Steel, junchanged at 38%. Metropolitan Bank To Honor Jacobsen On 50-Year Service By Donald B. Hadley The Board of Directors of the National Metropolitan Bank will honor President C. P. Jacobsen at a dinner tomorrow night at the Shoreham |'l pa n y execu t i v e s and Mr - Washington businessmen will attend. Out-of-town bankers and businessmen will join in the tribute. A silver service will be presented to him. Mr. Jacobsen entered the bank on April 20. 1903. as a mes senger. He was elected cashier in 1917 and executive vice presi dent in 1938. He became presi dent in January, 1939. Under his competent leader ship, the bank has opened two new branches, one at Forty ninth street and Fordham road N.W. in 1950 and another at First and O streets N.E, in June, 1951. Since he entered the bank In April, 1903, deposits have grown from $3,828,000 to $70,167,000. Back in 1903 there was no trust department. Trust assets now total $95 million. Has Wide Interests. Mr. Jacobsen is treasurer and director of J. Frank Kelly, Inc., and vice president and director of Geo. M. Barker Co. He is treasurer of the National Asso ciation of Motor Bus Operators, the Woodlawn Public Founda tion, Inc., the American Plan ning and Civil Association and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In addition to serv ing on the bank’s board, he is a director of the Potomac In surance Co. and Fidelity Storage Co. He is chairman of the advisory board, National Society, Daugh ters of the American Revolution, and chairmqp of the board of financial advisers, General Fed eration of Woman’s Clubs. He also is a trustee of the Better Business Bureau and the Boys’ Club of Washington and a member of the Washington Clearing House Committee, New comen Society in North America, the Association of Oldest In habitants and the Columbia His torical Society. He is a member of the Shrine, Jesters and Elks, the Washington Board of Trade and the District Bankers’ Asso ciation. Auto Sales Above 1952. Sales of both new and used cars in Washington exceeded a year ago in the first three months of this year, the Traffic Bureau disclosed yesterday. The bureau Issued 6,847 new car titles, compared with 5,662 in the same period last year, and 13.583 title transfers, compared with 13,288 a year earlier. Trans fers are representative of used car sales. New-car titles in March to taled 3,155 vs. 2,495 a year ear lier, while title transfers totaled 8,495 vs. 7,441. Bond Exchange Offered. Chairman Edward C. Baltz of the District Savings Bond Di vision yesterday reminded all holders of F and G Treasury bonds which mature between May 1 and December, 1953, of the Treasury offer to exchange their bonds for the new Treasury 3* /4 per cent fully marketable bonds. Application must be made be fore May 1, Mr. Baltz warned. Arrangements for the exchange should be made at Federal Re serve banks and branches, but Washington banks will be glad to advise holders, he said. The offer does not apply to Series E Savings Bonds which mature in the same period. Ex changes of Series F and G bonds will be made par for par and will be allotted in full. The lowest denomination of the new bonds will be SSOO, but holders of small | er denomination Series F and G bonds may exchange them for the next higher multiple of SSOO by paying the cash difference. Bruce Baird, president of the National Savings & Trust Co., is attending the annual spring meeting of the Executive Coun cil of the American Bankers’ Association at the Greenbrier, White Sulphur Springs, W.
