Gains today ran to around a point with minus signs small. Business continued a fairly good pace. Better gains were shown by steels, motors, rubbers, coppers and chemicals. Other areas of the list were mixed. Goodyear was the best in its division, still getting the bene fit of its report yesterday of good earnings. Higher stocks included Bethle hem Steel. Studebaker, General Motors, Standard Oil (N. J.), Al lied Chemical, and Paramount Pictures. Willys-Overland was active and higher including one block of 5,000 shares that went at 15 7 /a. up V*. Another good-sized block was 3,100 shares of Stanley Warner up V « at 10%. The market started quietly with overnight orders placing the emphasis on the buying side. Traders displayed a certain amount of caution because of yesterday’s sharp advance in prices. Corporate bonds were mixed. A private crop survey said that heavy rains in the Southeast were not needed but should be beneficial. A very small percentage of the crop may have to be replanted in some sections, the survey stated.
