KENTUCKY ORCHlD—Rosemary Clooney, singing star of a new Sunday night WMAL-TV series, which starts May 24. “The Orchid Room” is the show’s label, and Harry Sesnick’s band will play and Bert Lytell will act as host. On the Air Hersholt's Honors Mark Man of True Distinction By Harry MacArthur HONORED—Dr. Jean Hersholt. who also is known to millions as radio’s Dr. Christian, will tape record the program on June 2 before the American Medical As sociation convention in New York. . . . The association will take advantage of his presence by saluting him for “continuing reflection of credit upon the fam ily physician and general practi tioner.” ... If Mr. Hersholt. one of the most gracious men in the entertainment world, accepts gracefully, there will be good reason. ... He has had a lot of practice. Hersholt is an honorary doc tor of literature (De Landas University), an honorary doctor of humanities (Rollins College), an honorary master of arts (Bow doin College), an honorary doc tor of literature again (Illinois Wesleyan University) and an honorary doctor of laws (Uni versity of California). . . . The latter two degrees were In recog nition of his. translation and editing of the works of Hans Christian Anderson. He also has been made an honorary doctor of medicine by J the California Academy of Gen eral Practice. ... He has been made an honorary member of the Los Angeles Qounty Physi cians’ Aid Association, cited by the Journal of American Medcine and presented a certificate “for meritorious service to medicine” by the Medical Society of the District of Columbia He was named “The Doctor We Would Most Like to Work With” by the American Nurses Association, was made an honorary member of the Medical Association of Indiana and was cited by the College of Medical Evangelists. Hersholt has had medals and placques pressed on him by King Christian of Denmark (who also knighted him in 1946), the United States Treasury Depart ment, the Independent Motion Picture Producers Association, the Motion Picture Relief fc’und, the Masquers Club of Hollywood and the Los Angeles Breakfast Club. . . . He has received special “Oscars” statuettes for chari table works in 1939, for distin guished service as president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 1945 to 1949 and for “distinguished serv ices to the motion picture indus try.” Radio’s Dr. Christian is an hbnorary citizen of New Orleans, La., and an honorary mayor of Omaha. Nebraska. ... He has oeen cited by the President of the United States, Look and Screen Guide Magazines and the Na- j tional Father's Day Committee, which named him Radio Father of the Year in 1950. ... He is an honorary Indian chief (Sac and Fox tribes of lowa and the Rochester. N. Y„ clans of the Iroqois Confereration). ... He j also is one of the most genuinely likable men you are likely to find, | In or out of show business. ** * * THRILL—One of the many things Basil Rathbone did when he was here recently in the in terests of Shakespeare, was ap pear on one of the programs conducted by Nancy Osgood (WNBW-WRC). . . . They were walking down a corridor at the Wardman Park, where NBC’s ’ Washington studios are, when a resident of the hotel passed with a brace of Scotties in tow. . . . j Woman and dogs slid by fast, then she did a fast double-take, j turned and pursued Miss Osgood and Mr. Rathbone to the en trance of an elevator. . . . Just as the door closed, they heard the woman address her dogs: “Look, darlings. Look very hard and you can always know you’ve looked at Mr. Basil Rathbone.” ** * * TRAINED—Having wandered into the animal kingdom, we may as well tell you right now about Ted Lingo’s boxer, name of Countess. . . . Mr. Lingo, who performs various announcing chores for WTOP radio and television, does not have any notarized documents to back this up, but he swears it hap pened. . . . Countess is a bright dog. but she has the delusion that Mr. Lingo is boss around his house.... She will mind him, 1 or his daughter, Robin, but Mrs. Lingo might as well shout up the drain nine. ... So, the other day a workman appeared to perform some repairs at thi Lingo household. . . . Mr. Lingo was at work, Robin was off at play. ... Countess was not allowing any strange men in her boss’ house, even if her boss’ wife apparently was lax about it. . . . Mrs. Lingo pleaded. . . . Countess snarled. .. . The work man. knowing when he was well off, remained outside. ... Finally Mrs. Lingo got her husband on the telephone and recounted her tale of woe.. . . “Let me talk to her,” said Mr. Lingo. . . . Mrs. Lingo held the phone to Countess’ ear. . . . “Countess, get the heck down in the base ment” shouted Ted.... Countess, without another snarl, wheeled and got the heck down in the basement. ** * * MISQUOTED —Critics, prob ably since the first one, have had their troubles with those who misquote them. . . . Every critic soon learns that he should never write anything like “This play is a colossal stinker and you shouldn’t miss it if you go in for self-torture.” ... He knows that an ad will come out with this reading “Colossal. . . . You shouldn’t miss it.” . . . J. Fred Muggs, the chimpanzee straight man for Dave Garroway on NBC-TV’s “Today,” has joined the fraternity. . . . His picture recently appeared in an ad for the Chicago company of “The Male Animal.” ... He was quoted as saying I had more fun than a barrel of people.” ... A spokesman for the chimp claims the endorsement was unauthor ized. . . . J. Fred, he says, wouldn’t stoop to a joke like that.
