Carney, com mander in chief of Allied forces , in Southern Europe, are going to swap jobs. Admiral Fechteler’s new ap pointment was announced through the White House yes terday by Gen. Matthew B. Ridg way, supreme commander of the North Atlantic defense forces. Gen Ridgway himself has been named Army chief of staff effec j tive this summer. Nearly half a million voters go to the polls today to cast their ballots in a slambang battle for mayor of the Nation’s fourth largest city. Matched in the contest, one of the most bitterly waged in city history, are incumbent Mayor Fletcher Bowron and Represent ative Norris Foulson, who led in the primary. Mr. Bowron, 65, seeking his fifth term, put on the battle of his life to retain the SIB,OOO-a --year post he has held for more than 14 years. Mr. Poulson, 57, put up just as stiff a fight. Washing Preservers Fruit, Tests Show CHlCAGO.—Research has dis covered that washed cherries resist decay much better than unwashed fruit. Tests show that a week after picking, 43 per cent of cherries washed in plain water were still good and 55 per cent of those washed in a detergent solution were edible. Only 29 per cent of fruit that was unwashed was good. Eisenhower Sets Out Early for Beltsville President Eisenhower today is lunching on some of the food on which the Agriculture Depart ment is doing some research. I The President left early for ! the experimental station at | Beltsville, Md., where he will I make an inspection trip and then sample a menu that starts with orange juice and ends with salted pecans. The principal dish will be prime ribs of beef. Gen. Eisenhower is being ac companied on his tour by Agri culture Secretary Benson and some members of his staff. Bodies of 5 Area Men Returned From Korea The bodies of five District and nearby Maryland and Virginia men are among 239 Korean war dead being returned to the United States aboard the U. S. S. American Victory, the Depart ment of Defense announced today. The ship was expected to dock j at San Francisco today.
