Mrs. Hobby Receives
B'nai B'rith Award
By the Associated Press
KIAMESHA LAKE. N. Y.. May
26. Welfare Secretary Oveta
Culp Hobby today received the
"outstanding woman of the year"
award of the northeastern dis
trict of B'nai B’rith.
Mrs. Hobby, in turn, praised
the work of the Jewish service
organization, especially its finan
cial and moral support of the
National Jewish Hospital in
Denver.
“Many people are unaware
that this well-known institution
for tubercular patients is com
pletely non-sectarian," Mrs.
Hobby said in prepared remarks.
“B’nai B’rith not only founded
this hospital in 1899 but has been
most generous in its continued
support over the past half
century.”
Mrs. Hobby said she could
“think of no better symbol of
B’nai B’rith generosity” than the
inscription over the entrance of
the B’nai B’rith building, one of
several at the National Jewish
Hospital. The inscription reads:
“None may enter who can pay—
none can pay who enter.”

Lawyers Poke Editorial Fun
At One Another at Bar Outing
Rain dampened the landscape
but not the spirits of some 700
lawyers who poked editorial fun
at one another yesterday at the
District Bar Association's annual
outing.
Congressional Country Club,
scene of the affair, was also the
birthplace of two new publica
tions. “The Fifth Ward", edited
by Charles E. Ford, and “The
Uptown Lawyer”, of doubtful
origin.
Neither paper, reliable sources
reported, give any guarantee as
to publication. As one editor put
it, “our schedule will be spo-1
radic.”
The “Fifth Ward” represented
lawyers with offices on Fifth
street N.W, in the vicinity of Ju- j
diciary Square. It lampooned
former Commissioner F. Joseph
Donohue and upper crust bar
risters generally.
“The Uptown Lawyer,” a sur
prise publication distributed by
Josephine Garrison, a WAVE le
gal expert, suggested Fifth street
be renamed “Jiggs Alley.”
The first part of the day was
devoted to athletic contests, in- I
eluding a baseball game, golf,
coke drinking contest and tennis.
The affair wound up with a din- I
ner in the club’s main ballroom.
Winners of the contest were:
Donald Sullivan, the Judge
Ashley M. Gould Cup for low
gross golf score of 75: William
Hanlon, the Nathan Lubar Cup
for a low net of 70: William
Pavitt and Edward A. Beard,
tennis doubles, and Judge Thomas
D. Quinn the judicial golf contest.
Miss Garrison won the coke
drinking contest, defeating eight
men by drinking a bottle of the
soft drink through a baby bottle
nipple.
The annual softball game, um
pired by several Municipal Court
judges and former Commissioner
Donohue, was taken by junior
bar members by a score of 7 to 2.
Guests at the outing included
members of the Supreme Court,
U. S. Court of Appeals and Mili
tary Court of Appeals.
