DoofoM Inc., Mohawk, N.Y. ) 24 WHAT ARE YOUR CHANCES OF SUCCESS? Continued from page twelve make ends meet produced the fewest successful men. Q: At ichat age are you likely to be the most successful? A: Exhaustive studies con ducted at Ohio University show that in terms of productivity and creative ability, you’re likely to turn in the highest batting aver age between the ages of 30 and 40. This was found particularly true of men engaged in profes sional fields, such as science, medicine, research, psychology and kindred callings. The survey showed, however, that most busi ness executives don’t reach their top stride until appreciably later in life between 50 and 60. And 90 far as earning power alone is concerned, a survey of all age groups showed that most of the highest paid men are in their middle 50’s. Q: Do happiness and finan cial success tend to go hand in hand? A: Only to a certain extent. Peo ple with extremely low or high incomes tend to be the least happy. The happiest are those who have achieved a halfway de gree of financial success. Indeed, evidence all up and down the line indicates that an income sufficient to provide few economic security is most con ducive to happiness. (Enough to make ends meet comfortably, with some left over to add to the nest egg; but not enough to put you in the wealthy class.) Studies conducted by sociolo gist Judson T. Landis show, in cidentally, that most people tend to be happier during that period in their lives when they are climbing up the ladder of success, rather than after they have reached the top. Q: Is the man who gripes about his work less likely to succeed at it? A: If he’s disposed toward grip ing he’ll always find things to “Your move” complain about— even though his job fits him like a glove. This attitude used to be regarded as a liability, but science’s latest findings indicate that it may well be an asset. The University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research did a four-year survey of the person nel of leading U.S. companies. They found that the man who gripes about his work, his boss or his company is more likely to succeed than the man who either has no gripes or keeps them to himself. A man may gripe because he’s a perfectionist, or because he en visions some better way of doing things and does not yet have the authority to put his ideas into practice. But regardless of the motiva tion. the survey showed that the personality characteristics that dispose a man to griping also make him a better and more efficient worker. “While this type,” say the investigators, “will often spend a lunch hour denouncing his job and criticizing things in general, the driving urge to succeed will 9end this same subject back to work fired with more productive energy.” A spokesman for one of the country’s largest insurance com panies whose employees were included in the survey believes the investigation may produce startling results. “On the basis of the study,” he observed, “it may be that instead of firing a guy who threatens to punch his boss in the nose, we should pro mote him.” Q: Is it true that the price of success is often a mental or emotional breakdown? A: It sometimes happens, but far more often that’s the price of failure. It is certainly possible, for example, for the rising execu tive to be caught in such a mael strom of frictions and pressures Continued on next page HOW TO MAKE Hred Era feel Refreshed When your eyes have that used up feeling from the effects of wind, dust, glare or over-long hours of work.
