Continued from preceding page in his climb toward the top that he develops neurotic tendencies or even suffers a full-scale emo tional crack-up. There are few psychiatrists who haven’t num bered highly successful men among their clients. But and this is very significant—studies show that the incidence of neurosis and nervous disorders is a great deal higher among men who fail to suc ceed, or whose success is only medi ocre. Wide-scale studies conducted at Penn State and other leading re search centers have shown that the more successful you are, the less you are apt to be subject to mental and emotional disturbances. The Penn State study, which surveyed over 12,000 persons, showed that the lowest rates for mental break downs are among those who have achieved high prestige and high income; and the highest rates were found for those who had low pres tige and low income. Other investigations bear out the fact that successful endeavor the achievement of personal goals tends to have a beneficial effect on mental health, while failure and frustration are apt to have the opposite effect. Q: Is if true that you're likely to live longer if you're suc cessful? .4: Yes. Despite the oft-cited cases of successful men who overtax themselves to the point where they die in their prime, evidence indi cates that success, in most cases, tends to lengthen your life, while failure and frustration shorten it. A study of the life spans of 10,000 persons conducted at Westminster College showed that those who had distinguished themselves in their field of endeavor averaged appreciably longer lives than those who had not. As to why this should be. psy chologists point out that morale is an important factor so far as our physical well-being is concerned. And our morale is strongly influ enced by the degree to which our efforts are crowned with success. Medical studies all bear out the fact that, all other factors being equal, the more a man has to live for, the longer he’s likely to live. Q: Is it true that success tends to make people materialistic and forgetful of spiritual considerations? A: This has frequently been charged. But impartial evidence strongly suggests that the oppo site is true. Four nationwide sur veys have been undertaken to settle this point. Each was con ducted by a leading public-opinion research organization. All of them reported identical findings; that the percentage of church members is highest among that group of Americans who are the most suc cessful; and that the lowest per centage is found among those who are the least successful. That man cannot live by bread alone, seems to be far morepbvious to the man who has made his mark in the world than to the one who hasn’t.
