The Passing Show "Shane's Echo and Shadow Visible in Metro's 'Hondo' By Joy Carmody Although it looks enough like “Shane” to be a blood, or ink, brother, “Hondo” is not that closely related to the earlier film made by George Stevens. “Horldo”, now on the screens of the Metropolitan and Ambas sador theaters, is a better than average western, however. Two of its virtues are a basically solid script and the ring of authen ticity. Another is one of those laconically red-blooded perfor mances which John Wayne gives off so effortlessly and a fourth, the producers’ daring in casting Geraldine Page as Wayne’s co star. Although movie audiences never heard of Miss Page, she is a plain girl with a high acting voltage who surprised Broadway last season. She amply justifies the chance Director John Far row took in casting her so prom inently in her first Hollywood assignment. “Hondo” is in 3-D and, to the credit of the somewhat dis credited new process, it looks much better through the new type polarbid spectacles the management is providing now. ** * * It is pure coincidence, Holly wood explains, that “Hondo” bears such a close outward re semblance to “Shane.” This could be, but it is startling never theless. In it, Wayne plays a gunman with a conscience just like the one Alan Ladd impersonated in the earlier film. Moreover, he takes up residence in a remote settler’s home, one equipped with young woman and small boy, which might be the “Shane” setting shot from the other side. For all this similarity, “Hondo,” differs both in flavor and artistic merit. It is a much lighter hearted picture, for one thing. Wayne's gunman, unlike Ladd’s, is not a very grim man. In being the father to the boy whose father he is not, he has some interesting ideas on child rearing. Also in courting the boy’s mother, he can see no ground for feeling inhibited be cause she happens to be married. These provide handy comedy contrast for the more exciting phases of the plot, which has to do with an Apache uprising and how Wayne saves himself, the settler’s wife and child. ** * * Although it is not insistent in its morality, “Hondo” dwells to some extent and in a homespun way with the subject of honor. Wayne's hero, for example. i$ quick as a snake to kill a fellow human but he can’t tolerate a liar or a man, or woman, who breaks his word. Moreover, Hollywood Diary Cairo Movie Fans Don't Mind Delay By Sheilah Graham HOLLYWOOD. When the plane carrying Eleanor Parker, Robert Taylor, Carlos Thompson and Kurt Kas nar to Egypt for the filming of “Valley of the Kings,” was five hours late, it didn’t keep the 4,000 people at the Cairo airport from greeting them. In fact, the crowd waited until 3 in the morn ing for the plane to land, and it took the Holywood party an hour to get off the field. Producer Stanley Kramer comments: “If ‘Caine Mutiny’ isn’t a hit, I’m going to turn to playing professional football.” And he could do it, with those shoulders. But I don’t think Stanley has anything to worry about. June Haver made her first big public appearance since her re turn from convent life in true Hollywood style at the testimo nial dinner for former boss Dar ryl Zanuck. The photographers swarmed around June and the popping flash bulbs raised the temperature of the room 10 de-' grees. . . . And all eyebrows were raised when Jeff Chandler twoed with Mona Freeman as more than 700 celebrities turned out to pay trfibute to 20th Century- Fox’s production chief. Jack Benny, master of cere monies, got the biggest laugh when he demanded a refund of the pennies he put in parking meters for the time he didn’t use up. And he appealed to Gov ernor Knight, Senator Knowland and Los Angeles Mayor Poulson, seated around him to use their j political influence to help him. Shirley Temple’s speech was the most touching. And she drew a laugn when she told how her former boss watched over her so well as a child to see that she didn't catch any germs, that she’s now making up for it by catching the measles and chicken pox from her children! . . . The reading of President Eisenhower’s letter brought tears to Zanuck’s eyes. Director Mike Curtiz was the first to stand and bring the huge crowd to its feet in paying hom age to Gen. When it needs the filip of a blood-letting, on a [ personal or mass scale, the 1 script always has one handy. It I is also ready with the relief of a mere physical brawl, in each 1 case fought out in the spirit of 1 muscular fun. With Wayne’s Hondo a mere echo of 20 or 30 previous char acters he has played, the really noticeable piece of acting here is that of Miss Page. In her opening scenes, she is clearly not at home before Director Farrow's cameras but she is eminently ' sure of herself as the picture gets older. There is nothing special about young Lee Asker as there was in the case of Brandon de Wilde in “Shane,” but as an Apache i with an instinct for social jus tice, Michael Pate joins Miss Page in a visibly interesting per formance. ** * * SATURDAY SUMMARY: Fea tured in the current issue of Life magazine under theater is ; Washington’s Thomas Noyes, leading male character in an ar ticle: “So You Want to Be a Producer.” ...
