Bfthne and Rothrock Quit Coaching Jobs As Sf. Anthony, W-L By Bob Hanson Two Wai jWton area high school bask tball coaches. Jack Bohne of r*. Anthony and John Rothrock gos Washington-Lee, have rrjfgned, it was learned today. Boh* A, who directed the To nies t'./the Metropolitan tourna ment championship two years ago in his first season as varsity coach, has accepted a position as assistant to the manager in charge of conventions at the Homestead Hotel, Hot Springs, Va. He takes over his new job Monday. Rothrock. a member of the faculty at W-L, passed the Vir ginia bar examinations a few months ago and expects to de vote considerable time to his law work although retaining his po sition as a teacher at the school. He is attending George Wash ington Law School in the eve nings and expects to receive his degree in June. Makes Tough Decision. The 23-year-old Bohne, a graduate of St. Anthony where he played baseball and basket ball, is giving up coaching re luctantly, but considered the new offer too attractive to turn down. “It was a tough decision,” he said. The coaching job, which Bohne assumed when Ed Moyle entered the Army, was on a part time basis. He was employed for several years as property man ager of an apartment house. Bohne took over the varsity after six years with CYO teams and the junior varsity at St. An thony. He accomplished the “rags-to-riches” victory in the Metro tourney on his first try. He coached the Tonies to a 14-8 record last season. They went to the finals in the Catholic League, losing to Gonzaga, 55-53, for the championship and got as far as the semifinals in the Metro. Developed Two Stars. In his two years with the var sity, Bohne is credited with the development of Jack Sullivan and Bill Cassidy, two of the out standing high school basketball players in the area in the last several years. Both Sullivan, now a member of the varsity at Mount St. Mary’s, and Cassidy, led the Catholic League in scor ing in their senior year. Sullivan, whose brother Joe was a member of last year’s St. Anthony team, was an All-Cath olic and All-Metro tournament selection. Cassidy was accorded the same honor. He also tied a scoring record for a single game in the Metro tourney when he got 33 points in the opening game against Wilson. The rec ord is shared by Bob Hampton, who made it while with Mary land Park in 1951. Although no official announce ment has been made, Moyle is expected to take over again as basketball coach this fall. He is a lay teacher at St. Anthony and presently coaching the baseball team. Started at Mount Vernon. Rothrock, 29-year-old native of Indiana, attended Purdue and Northwestern Universities, grad uating from the latter. His first coaching venture was at Mount Vernon High, a position he held for two years before moving to W-L. In his five years as basket ball coach of the Generals his teams won 80 games while los ing 18. Washington-Lee was Northern Virginia titlist last year and co-titlist with George Washington the year before. “I am associated with a law firm in Fairfax and expect to work for them this summer,” he said. “When school re-opens in the fall I’ll return as a teacher but will be unable to continue as basketball coach and still keep up my law work.” Rothrock will be succeeded by Ralph Guinther, a mathematics teacher at W-L and coach of the Junior varsity basketball team for the last several years. 36"«72” Cotton Felt Government Surplu, «*72" Flottic SLEEPING BAG Reconditioned Army AIR MATTRESS PUP tents FW __ A 99 SSTxna: 7.29 - « 35” double pull upper f Ujed but reconditioned. “ 1 halfway down side.
