The Veterans Administration’s “brain center” moved to Roanoke from Washington in a quasi secret dispersal coincident with the mock bombing raid on the United States Monday. Should the attack ever take place. Roa noke will become the headquar ters of the Federal agency for at least two years. This was made known yester day as a team of VA officials completed a preliminary survey of available facilities. Selection of Roanoke to be come the emergency headquar ters if the VA is part of the nation-wide plans for dispersing vital government agencies for the duration of hostilities. While the VA group was en route to Roanoke they were alerted at 9:16 a.m. and left Washington by private automo biles—other Government agen cies were dispatching their key personnel to predetermined points. Should the “real thing” ever take place, approximately 1,000 VA personnel would be trans ported to Roanoke. Here they would set up a counterpart of the Washington headquarters, while other re gional offices would have their own dispersal areas. Newspaperman Is 91 HUNTINGTON, W. Va., June 16 (Special). West Virginia’s oldest newspaperman, in point of active service and in years, ob served another birthday recently. He is Col. J. H. Long, 91, presi dent of the Huntington Publish ing Co., which publishes the Huntington Advertiser and the Herald Dispatch. Col. Long has spent more than 70 years in the newspaper business, more than 6G of them in Huntington where he also has radio and television interests.
