VA 'Brain Center'
Moves to Roanoke
By the Associated Freu
ROANOKE. Va., June 16.
The Veterans Administration’s
“brain center” moved to Roanoke
from Washington in a quasi
secret dispersal coincident with
the mock bombing raid on the
United States Monday. Should
the attack ever take place. Roa
noke will become the headquar
ters of the Federal agency for at
least two years.
This was made known yester
day as a team of VA officials
completed a preliminary survey
of available facilities.
Selection of Roanoke to be
come the emergency headquar
ters if the VA is part of the
nation-wide plans for dispersing
vital government agencies for
the duration of hostilities.
While the VA group was en
route to Roanoke they were
alerted at 9:16 a.m. and left
Washington by private automo
biles—other Government agen
cies were dispatching their
key personnel to predetermined
points.
Should the “real thing” ever
take place, approximately 1,000
VA personnel would be trans
ported to Roanoke.
Here they would set up a
counterpart of the Washington
headquarters, while other re
gional offices would have their
own dispersal areas.
