Phillips Gallery. Pro tram; Gamba Sonata No. 3. G minor. Bach; Sonata. Opus 11, No. 4. Hinde mith; Suite, Vaughan Williams; Bonata In P minor. Opus ISO, No. 1. Brahms. Elmira Bier, the energetic di rector in charge of music at the Phillips Gallery, apparently knows nothing of a summer re cess in her job of presenting first class recitals twice a week.! Hers is the only indoor temple to St. Cecaelia whose festivities have neither stopped for the sea son nor become in any degree sporadic. Last night she pre sented William Preucil, violist, and John Berkman, pianist, in a program of good music well played. ’ The Bach sonata was written for neither viola nor piano, and while the modern viola can sub stitute very well for the gamba, a much larger instrument played between the knees like a cello, the piano last night was neither outbalancing its companion or being so consciously restrained that the clarity of the music suf fered. The Hindemith sonata that followed was a different matter. In it the two musi cians played with the greatest freedom and with complete unity and composure. The suite for viola and piano of Vaughan Williams, the Eng lish master who is scheduled to visit the United States next fall, consists of a prelude, a carol and a Christmas dance. It is short and unpretentious, but of con siderable melodic charm, en hanced no doubt by the unusual sequence of movements. The Brahams F minor clarinet sonata which closed the recital, was published by the composer with the suggestion that it was suitable also for viola. Nothing is lost by the substitution except perhaps the fascinating change of sound of the clarinet in play ing arpeggios from the bottom to top of its register, a change which cannot be matched on the viola. Both of the artists are well known as Washington recital ists. Each is entirely at home with his instrument, and to gether they last night communi cated to their large audience easily and with great musical finesse. | First Postal Service A weekly dhow from the port of Lamu will give Faza Island, off Kenya, its first postal service, Nairobi learns.
