June 21. Doctors no longer can justifiably charge for their services on the basis of a patient’s salary, Dr. Edward J. McCormick, outgoing I president, today told the Ameri- j can Medical Association (AMA). The Toledo surgeon, in a pre pared repqrt marking the end of his term, urged the profes sion to adopt average fee sched ules on an area or regional basis. The average fee schedule has been put forward by several medical leaders as a first step toward establishing prepaid medical care plans on an actu arial basis like automobile in surance. Insurance organiza tions, knowing definitely what charges would be made, could quote rates accordingly. Dr. McCormick said the post ing of average fee schedules in doctors’ offices would make known to the policy holder in health care plans the extent to 1 which he would have to pay out I j of his own pocket to supplement I medical insurance benefits. AMA Report Aims To Settle Differences Over Blood Pressure By the Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO, June 21. America’s doctors today were shown the preliminary results of an attempt to establish a new definition of what constitutes normal blood pressure in healthy older people. Medical opinion now varies so widely as to the meaning of blood pressure figures that no justifiable conclusions can be drawn from them, said four New York City physicians. They pre sented a preliminary picture of the new project as an exhibit at the American Medical Associa tion (AMA) convention. The doctors are Arthur M. Master, Harry L. Jaffe, Richard P. Lasser and Simon Dack. Examples Listed. As an example of the lack of uniformity, the physicians exhib ited charts of how the figures among many sources now vary for people past 60. The systolic is the pres ; sure at the time of heartbeat. In hospital and in industry only 42 per cent of the men had read ings that high. A current survey of physicians all over the country, collected by the reporting doctors, shows the percentage of healthy men in the 60-69 age group with readings of 150 or over is 48. Slightly higher readings are given in the preliminary report for the 70 to 7? year age group, , and still higher for men 80 to ! 89 years old. Radical Ulcer Treatment. Claims that nearly 1,900 out of 2,000 ulcer patients had been treated successfully with pills and at the same time were al lowed an unlimited diet, includ ing liquor and tobacco, were made by a Cleveland physician in another exhibit of the AMA | convention. | Dr. E. A. Marshall said this was done by giving pills every hour and sometimes oftener for the first 16 hours of treatment. Dr. Marshall is director of the medicine department of Huron Road Hospital, Cleveland. He made the pills out of sev eral conventional anti-ulcer chemicals, including anti-acids, : sedatives and dilating agents. On this treatment, Dr. Mar shall asserted, the vast majority of patients were able to go ahead with an unlimited diet. 400 Sheriffs to Hold Conference June 28-30 More than 400 sheriffs and deputies are expected to attend the 14th annual Informative Conference of the National Sheriff’s Association.
