Bassanio Beats Cold Command by 2 Lengths m Delaware Stake Phipps Colt Captures Sussex Handicap as 22,553 Watch Race •y the Associated Prtu STANTON, Del., July 3. Bassanio, Ogden Phipps’ home bred colt, found the mile-and-a quarter distance of Delaware Park’s $29550 Sussex Handicap to his liking today end raced to a surprise victory over C. V. Whitney’s favored Cold Com mand. The stretch-running Bassanio, a son of Bimelech ridden by Sidney Cole, registered by two lengths in 2:02 flat. The Silver Gale Stable’s Combat Boots was third, another nine lengths out of it, with the Saxon Stable’s In vigorator fourth. Mr. Skip was fifth, with Post Card last in the small field of six. A crowd of 22,553 saw Bas sanio earn $20,400 as the major share of the purse and pay $22.80 in the mutuels after go ing off at 10 to 1. The winner carried only 107, getting a con cession of 11 pounds from Cold Command, who was backed down to 9 to 5. First Stakes Victory. It was Bassanlo’s first) stakes conquest, although he frequently had come close to such a suc cess. Earning his third triumph •In a dozen 1954 starts, the colt ran one of his best races in Bel mont Park’s Suburban Handicap when he was second behind Straight Face. In addition to the purse he won today. Bassanio also earned a trophy which was presented by Mrs. J. Simpson Dean, wife of the Delaware Park vice president and treasurer. The crowd had a difficult time | deciding on which of three horses to make favorite, finally landing on Cold Command, who had won two races earlier in the Del aware meeting including the Brandywine Handicap. There also was strong support for Post Card and Invigorator. Probably the most disappointed spectators were Invigorator’s owners—L. R. Allison of El Paso, Tex., and M. R. Prestridge of Alamogordo. N. M. They and trainer Eddie Neloy occupied a clubhouse box with Senator Clin ton Anderson of New Mexico, former Secretary of Agriculture. In the recent Edgemere Han dicap at Aqueduct, Invigorator scored an impressive triumph, and before that had been second in the Queens County Handicap, in which Cold Command ran third. Post Card showed the way to Combat Boots arid Invigorator until they came to the turn out of the backstretch, while Bas sanio and Cold Command were being rated along, not too far away. On the last curve, Bas sanio shot between horses to as sume the lead as Cold Command circled his rivals and challenged. The latter was unable to menace the victor in the drive home. In vigorator lacked a closing rally, fading out of contention as Com bat Boots beat him for the show by two lengths. Morning Telegraph Consensus DELAWARE PARK (Monday’s Selections.) 1. Recluse 27. Record Field of 21 Named to Start in New Castle Handicap Spatial Dispatch to Tha Star STANTON. Del., July 3.—A record 21-horse field was entered today for Monday’s Delaware Park closing-day classic, the New Castle Handicap, which will be the richest filly-and-mare stake in turf history. Barring scratches, the 17th running of the holiday feature will gross $139,400 and net the winner $102,800. For any scratch in the famed mlle-and-a-q uar te r test, the SI,OOO starting fee is deducted from both figures. ■There are two couplings in the race. Carry The News and Ming Yellow will go as the C. V. Whitney representatives, while King Ranch’s Riverina and J. 8. Phipps’ Spinning Top, both trained by Max Hirsch, form another entry. La Corredora Among Stars. Virtually every ranking mem ber of the distaff division is named, including Grecian Queen, defending champion and leading filly last year; Evening Out, champion juvenile filly of 1953; Sunshine Nell, top-weight ed at 126 pounds; the stretch running La Corredora, and two foreign - bred stars lreland’s Blue Butterfly and Chile’s Inter cion. Blue Butterfly, first horse ever to make a transcontinental flight for a Delaware Park reuse, ar rived last night from Los An geles in a cargo plane with Vance Longden, part owner and trainer. Parlo, the Delaware Oaks win ner, will attempt to become the first 3-year-old to capture both the Oaks and the New Castle. In 16 previous New Castles, a sophomore has won five times. A half dozen 3-year-olds are named this time—Parlo, Evehirig Out, Open Sesame (runner-up in the Coaching Club American Oaks and Delaware Oaks), Riv erina, Fascinator and O’Alison. Grecian Queen and La Corre dora drew 124 pounds, which is even with Evening Out’s 114, according to the weight-for-age scale, and two below Sunshine Nell’s assignment. Many Stakes Winners. Winners of this year stakes in the field include: Sunshine Nell, Top Flight Handicap: Fasci nator. Kentucky Oaks and Columbiana Handicap: Sunny Dale, Churchill Downs Handi cap: Parlo, Delaware Oaks; Shady Tune, Molly Pitcher Handicap, Blue Butterfly, San Mateo Matron Handicap; At lanta, Suwanee River Handicap; Gainsboro Oirl, Black Helen Handicap, and Riverina, ‘dead heat with Harry Mood in the Acorn Stakes. Delaware Park, the only mile track in America with a 100-foot wide front and back stretch, can well handle a large field such as this, which also includes Hill, Mr- Jo:'ne and No Third Chance. Two stall gates can be used to accommodate the horses. Cumberland Results By Ilia Associated Press FIRBT RACE—Purs'- Sl.onO; claim ing; 4-year-olds and up: eb-ut 5 fur longs. Louis O’Connor of Washington, is one of the favored entries in tomorrow’s mile-and-a-quarter New Castle Handicap at Delaware Park. Top prize will be $102,800 should all 21 start. Up on LaCorredora is Ira Hanford, who will ride her tomorrow. By Bill Fuchs Mr. and Mrs. J. Louis O’Con nor will have five horseshoes going for them tomorrow in the rich New Castle Handicap at Delaware Park. Four will carry their mare. LaCorredora, over the mile-and-a-quarter distance. The other is the proverbial one the O’Connors always have with them and without which they would not be horse owners today. If LaCorredora wins, carrying Jockey Ira (Babe) Hanford and 124 pounds, it will mean about SIOO,OOO to the O’Connors. This is the same Washington couple who 15 years- ago wanted out from under and could find no takers. Incidentally, LaCorredora runs in the colors of O’Connor’s wife, Marian, who would get a check for $102,800 should the mare win and all 21 entries go to the post tomorrow. The mare has a good chance, too. The couple’s luck in racing, O’Connor says, has -been “pheno menal.” He would have said that they had no chance at all to achieve their present success. “It just happened,” he explained. Workman Started it AIL The O’Connors’ horse-owning career had its beginning when he was a struggling attorney and a vacation to California didn’t cost anywhere near what it does now. “It was during the depression,” O’Connor says, "and nobody had any money. Sonny Workman was riding on the coast and we stopped in to see him. He sug gested meeting Sport Haymaker, the trainer, and it was Sport who put the horse-owning idea into my head. ‘Sure, I’d like to’ own a horse,’ I said, ‘but what do I use for money?’ ” A few years later, O’Connor found enough money to buy a horse in a claiming race, but he lost it back to claiming later, at a small profit. < “We lost every horse we owned in claimers up to the time of Nellie Mowlee,” O’Connor says, “but each time we made a profit. Had we lost at any time, that would have been the end of the O’Connors’horse-owning career.” Nobody Wanted Nellie Mowlee. And then came Nellie Mowlee and when the O’Connors wanted to unload, nobody wanted the mare. She had suffered a knee in jury and all the O’Connors wanted to do was get out alto gether. “What could we do?” O’Connor asks “When you own a mare that no one will buy, all you can do is breed her and hope to get even.” The O’Connors are more than even off their first breeding at tempt. Little Beans was the sire and LaCorredora the foal. La- Corredora, now 5 years old, won the Ladies Handicap, a mile-and a-lialf test at Belmont, for her biggest victory to date. “She wen $40,000,” O’Connor says, as though he still can’t bslieve it. "That was a real big one.” Genial Bill Destroyed Nellie Mowlee has had four other "foals since. The second, Genial Bill by Alaking, cut a tendon on the rail at Atlantic City and had to be destroyed. But Busy Nellie, now a 3-year- I old by Occupy, was a winner last year and finished fourth recently in the Delaware Ooks in, a fast field. Marian R6yal, named for Mrs. O’Connor, is by Alaking. A 2-yeer-old filly, *she hasn’t started yet. Completing the O’Connor stable is Land O’Lib erty, a yearling full sister of La- Corredora, In her most recent outing, La- Corredora was third behind Eve ning Out and Grecian Queen In a $3,000 handicap race for fillies and mares last Monday at Dela- Exptrt Repair Service L. Sunshine Nell, winner of the Top Flight Handicap and a three-stakes winner last year, is top-weighted at 126 pounds. Orecian Queen shares second weight with LaCorredora. But Evening Out a 3-year-old, has only 114 pounds, so the Wash ington mare has a job to do. The O’Connors are both Wash ington-born. In fact, they met while attending Eastern High School and have been married 29 years. They have three daugh ters, all graduates of Coolidge High and all married, and three granddaughters. The luckiest horse owners In the world, according to their own appraisal, now live at 3703 Chevy Chase Lake Drive, but up until five years ago they had spent their entire lives in Washington’. O’Connor’s father was the well known Pat O’Connor, Washing ton bondsnfen and sports author ity. “I voted for Eisenhower.” O’- Connor says. "It was the first time In my life I ever voted for anyone.” Neither the O’Connors nor their daughters have ever ridden a horse. “We’re not horsemen,” O’Con nor says. “We’re just like every body else—only luckier.” No Rest for Anybody REST-AND- BE - THANKFUL, Scotland, July 3 (JP). Each winner led all the way and splashed home over a muddy track a length and a quarter ahead. A throng of 28,378 attended the opening of Arlington’s big holiday program which Monday features another twin bill, the $25,000-added Stars and Stripes Handicap and the $15,000-added Pollyanna stakes*. The Cleopatra was Blue Violin’s race from start to finish as Queen Hopeful, the 9-to-10 fav vorite from Hasty House Farm, bogged down to seventh in the early going. While Jockey Dave Erb was getting Blue Violin home a length and a quarter ahead of Roman Warbler, Queen Hopeful couldn’t finish any closer than third—five lengths farther back. Blue Violin returned $10.40, $5.20 and $2.80 In the betting. Roman Warbler, an entry with Oil Painting, paid $6 and $2.50, while Queen Hopeful’s show price was $2.40. Due de Fer, ridden by Logan Batcheller, was the only 3-year old in the eight-horse field in the Myrtlewood. He jumped In front at the start and led the rest of the way.
