The boys have been put through sonic uninspired paces in recent films but this one is something else. The Ben Hecht book for “Hazel Flagg” has been tailored intq a highly comic Lewis vehicle by Jack Rose and Mel ville Shavelson. “Living It Up,” as a matter of fact, is a third version of the yarp, which originally was a movie called “Nothing Sacred." with Carole Lombard and Fredric March. This time Comic Lewis plays the Lombard role and Janet Leigh the one originally done by March. This is a con siderable switch, but it does not sap the yarn’s basic comedy strength. It has Lewis as a station master at a desert flag stop where the flag never stops the Super Chief. He is believed to have become fatally radioactive and a New York sob sister (Miss Leigh) is dispatched to bring him to New York for a last fling. By this time he has dis covered that the moderately inept doctor (Martin) has been led astray by the radium dial on his watch and Instead of being radioactive he merely has a small sinus condition. Miss Leigh, at least in this case, is enough to outshine a Hippocratic oath, however, so doctor and “patient” accompany her to New York. It is quite a last fling they have at Publisher Fred Clark’s expense, too v It is enlivened by such moments as that when Lewis, overcome by generosity, yells out his hotel window and invites everybody up for dinner, promptly calls room service and orders 5,000 shrimp cocktails. Without a hint of sur prise, room service obeys. Lewis has a more than modest fling at a night club, too, when he gets into a terpsichorean tempest with singy Sheree North. It’s a jitterbug dance to end them all, though it probably won’t. Director Norman Taurog has Lewis and Martin more subdued than usual, but this will serve only to make the team bearable to a wider audience. Lewis still is given enough opportunity in the Technicolor musical to cut loose in the style his fans prefer. He makes the most of it, too. For those who like the Martin singing, there is a lot of it. some songs from the “Hazel Flagg” score and some new. It’s Jerry Lewis/ abetted by a solid scenario, who makes "Living It Up” live it up, though. get paid extra, know^J I Lucerne is "Bonus Ounlity" Milk | My I?’ • Lucerne sets its own standards-well above legal standards-for the purity, flavor^smid Lucerne pays farmers extra money, bonus | money, for milk that scores high in all those -*=>=*— qualities.
