Foge A-16 croft Raceway toppled onto the track less than 80 yards from the finish line as the crowd of 12,000 gasped. Other drivers in the first heat of a free-for-all pace sharply swerved their horses to avoid striking Mr. Miller’s body. As his wife, the former Alice Vir ginia Koogle of Middletown, Md., watched, a doctor hastened to the stricken man’s side and five minutes later pronounced him dead of a heart attack. Race All But Won. Mr. Miller was driving his mare Josedale Alate, bought for $13,000 at auction four months ago, in the day’s third event. The race appeared to be all but won when, coming into the stretch, another driver saw Mr. Miller waver and decided he was in trouble., Britt Holloway, the track’s secretary-manager, said Mr. Mil ler was so sac out in front he undoubtedly would have won. Ninety-five degree heat was believed to have contributed to the tragedy ending nearly 50 years of racing for the veteran turfman who won the first event he ever entered in 1907 at the old Brightwood track here. Like yesterday’s closing chapter, it was a free-for-all pace. Ever since 1907, he has been driving harness racers and breeding them. He has often been acknowledged the Nation’s consistently top driver. In 1949, i when he was 70, he waS Amer ica’s leading driver, with 105 vic tories to his credit that year. He had his best day in 1951 when he won seven out of eight races at Freehold, N. J. His interest in harness racing led in 1949 to his founding of the $1.3 million Rosecroft Race way at Oxon Hill, Md., where he : had a farm also called Rosecroft. i Mr. Miller lived at 6025 Brink ley road, in Oxon Hill. Was to Race Last Night. Last night he was due to drive ; in the SIO,OOO Baltimore Invita- ! tion Race. Mr. Miller’s $35,000 ! horse, Hillsota, which he per sonally trained, was scratched from the race because of his death. Mr. Miller was founder of the; furniture company here that bears his name. A native of Westmoreland County, Va., he came from a farming family. In 1895, on arriving in Washington, he and an uncle entered the furniture business, and he opened i his own store five years later.' The firm, now estimated to do 1 : about $2 million in business an nually, has two stores, at Sev- : enth and E streets S.W., and' UUMAfe, ■r l FALVEY BUp&l f Jj^TAYM^a^UOa G. W. Eighth street and Pennsylvania avenue S.E. His efforts at breeding the harness horses were consistently successful, and the breeding farm on his estate was consid ered to be the third largest in the United States. When, only a few years ago, harness racing became a sport involving millions of dollars, Mr. Miller decried the scandals that touched it. He stressed that the racing itself was never to blame but that whatever scandalous action came about, was caused by unethical Individuals who, es pecially in the East, rose to the management and operation of the tracks. Barred From Own Track. Bearing the good of the sport in mind,. Mr. Miller accepted a decision by the Maryland Racing Commission, which stated that he could not compete in harness races on his own track. On March 29, Mr. Miller cele brated both his 75th birthday and his 50th wedding anniver sary. That day he worked out 22 horses. He used to point out that age had nothing to do with harness racing, because once in the blood, the thrills of the sport never left. One employe said of Mr. Miller: “Never saw anything like him. He goes at top speed from 8 o’clock in the morning until 8 o’clock at night, and in between he wonders why there isn’t more daylight.” The survivors, in addition to the widow are a son, John W. Miller; two daughters, Mrs. Clarence Hahner and Mrs Robert L. Densford, and six grandchildren. The son was closely associated with the father in business and is secretary-treasurer of Rose croft.
