Hubbard, Famed Physicist and CU Professor, Dies Dr. John Charles Hubbard. 75, one of the Nation’s most dis tinguished physicists, collapsed and died late yesterday at Cath olic University, where he was research professor in ultrasonics. Dr. Hubbard was found un conscious about 3:45 p.m„ slumped over his desk in the basement of McHahon Hall, by the Rev. Prank A. Gutowski, a student. Dr. Hubbard was pro nounced dead 15 minutes later by Dr. John F. Brennan. Jr„ 1704 Michigan avenue NJE.. who had been treating the physicist for a heart condition. The body was removed to the James T. Ryan funeral home, 317 Penn sylvania avenue S.E. A native of Boulder, Colo., Dr. ; Hubbard, who lived at 4304 Thir teenth place N.E., received his bachelor of science degree from the University of Colorado in 1901. He received his doctorate in philosophy from Clark University in Worcester, Mass., in 1904. In 1938, he was awarded an honor ary doctorate in laws from Loyola College in Baltimore. Began Teaching. During 1904 and 1905, Dr. Hubbard was an instructor in physics at Simmons College in Boston, and from 1905 to 1906 he was assistant professor of physics at New York University, For the next four years, he had the same position at Clark University. He became professor of physics at Clark in 1910 and in 1916 headed the physics department there. From 1916 to 1927 he headed the physics department at NYU. For the next 19 years, he was professor of physics at Johns Hopkins University, and was with that school’s Physics Radiation Laboratory from 1946 to 1947, Then he went to Catholic Uni versity as research professor, the office he held at his death. World War I Officer. Dr. Hubbard’s military record started as a captain in the Army Signals Corps and later he be came a major during World War I. In World War 11, he was a member of the National De fense Research Council and, from 1943 to 1947, was a tech nical expert assigned to the Aberdeen (Md.) Proving ground, and until death was a consult ant to this unit. His associations with organiza tions in the field of physics were numerous. Dr. Hubbard was a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Physicists Society, the Acoustical Society of American, in which he Society of America, in which he American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was a member of the Na tional Research Council from 1931 to 1933, and an officer of the French Academy in 1919. His writings were many. They included a manual of experi ments in physics, written in 1936; papers on oscillations, sound waves and ultrasonics and the phenomenom of vision. In Editor Roll He was an associate editor of the Physical Review from 1931 to 1934. Dr. Hubbard also was an associate officer of the Naval Research Laboratory, a member of Sigma Xi, and the American Association of University Profes sors. He was engaged in post-doc toral research in higher physics. Students from as far away as Italy, Turkey, Iran and India came here to study under him. Dr Hubbard received the Mendel Medal from Villanova College in 1946 for distinguished work in his field. In addition to ultrasonics, he specialized in re lated technical fields, including the relaxation effects of acous tics. • His widow, who survives him is the former Gertrude Lenore Pardieck. There also is a sister, Miss Helen Hubbard, of Phoe nix, Ariz., and a brother, Ed ward, of Chico, Calif. Burial will be in Richmond, Ind. Keuhne, 56, former archivist for the Presi- I dent’s Special Commission on Immigration and Naturalization, died Sunday of cancer at her home, 3817 Beecher street N.W. In 1950, Mrs. Keuhne under- ! went an operation for removal of her larynx. She trained at Walter Reed, however, on how to speak by using the muscles in j her throat and abdomen. She j became so good at it that she j was made a delegate to the First ! International Convention of. Laryngectomy held in Cleveland in 1952. Doctors often called on her to give speech demonstra- : tions. Mrs. Keuhne was able to re- , turn to work. She retired In 1953 when the Commission on Immi- ! gration and Naturalization com peted its work. The former Vera Miller, Mrs. Keuhne was born in Saratoga, Ind. She came to Washington in 1917 and began Government service as secretary to the libra rian of the Army Medical Li brary. Later she was with the Federal Security Agency. From 1948 to 1952 she was chief of files and archivist for the Displaced Persons Commis sion, co-ordinating displaced per sons files in the United States and overseas. Survivors are her husband, a retired attorney; a son, Richard W., 510 Fenwick drive, Alexan dria; two sisters and two brothers, Miss Gwendolyn Miller and O. A. Miller, both of Tren ton,' N. J.; Joseph F. Miller, Houston, Tex., and Mrs. Wilmer Marsh, Ridgeville, Ind., and a grandson. Services will be at 10 a.m. to morrow at DeVol’s funeral home, 2224 Wisconsin avenue N.W. McCarty, 60, whose husband is manager of the Potomac Yards in Alex andria, died Sunday at her home, 1107 South Washington street, Alexandria. She had suffered a I stroke in June. Mrs. McCarty was the former Thekla Emmons. She was born in Culpeper, Va. and was reared in Philadelphia. She lived in Kansas City, Mo., from 1925 to 1940 when Mr. McCarty was with the Kansas City Southern Rail- i road. They had lived in Alex andria since 1943. Mrs. McCarty was a member of the Women of the Rotary in Alexandria. Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. William H. Hume, Albuquerque, N. Mex ; a brother, French M. Green, who retired in 1943 as an examiner for the In terstate Commeroe Commission, died Sunday (Ohio) News. Mr. Oraea. j n 1900 he wa , appointed assistant postmaster in his native Salem. Ten years later, he Joined the ICC In Den ver as a clerk-typist and later was private secretary to Com missioner Frank McManamy from 1923 until 1939. He came to Washington 40 years ago with the ICC. When he was 54, Mr. Green began studying law. He received his bachelor and master of laws degrees and master of patent law from National University. For a time, Mr. Green was in the building business. As a part ner in the firm of Oliver and Green, he built nearly a score of houses in the Northwest sec tion of Washington during the post-World War I years. After he retired from the ICC, he was real estate salesman for Cuvier A. Metzler. Survivors are his widow, the former Margaret Pow of Salem, with whom he celebrated his gold en wedding anniversary in 1949; a son, Frederick H. Green, Cedar lane, Fairfax, Va., Senate editor of the Daily Digest of the Con gressional Record, and two grandchildren. Services will be held at 10 a m. tomorrow in the Hines funeral home, 2901 Fourteenth street N.W. His ashes will be buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Mrs. John S.
