Tom Watson, 68, G.O.P. Candidate for [ Governor of Florida By the Associated Press TAMPA. Fla., Oct. 25.—Death : has removed J. Tom Watson, 68. from the stormy Florida political scene. A. former State attorney gen eral who was running as the Republican candidate for Gover nor after two unsuccessful at tempts to gain the Democratic nomination. Mr. Watson died from complications of a heart condition yesterday. He seemed to be recovering l from a light stroke suffered in j July, which limited his cam paigning against Democrat Leroy 1 Collins of Tallahassee. * Mr. Collins defeated Acting 1 Gov. Charley Johns in a runoff 1 for the Democratic nomination. 1 Mr. Watson never made any 1 victory claims, but was given an 1 outside chance of winning the 1 election. States* Rights Champion. The fiery lawyer, a staunch i: champion of States’ rights, broke j with the Democratic Party in! 1948 after more than 20 years and registered as an independ ent. He said the national Dem ocratic convention “abused and insulted Southern Democracy.” He joined the Republican Party two years ago. Mr. Watson opposed the United States Supreme Court ruling against segregation and pledged that if elected he would! see that segregation remained in Florida, schools. He wfes known as the father of Florida’s anti-closed shop law, | served as the State’s attorney i general from 1941 to 1949 and I was a State Representative in 1931. His unsuccessful campaigns as a Democrat included running for the gubernatorial nomina tion in 1932 and 1948 and for Congress in 1950. > Successor Decision Waits. Attorney General Richard Ervin said the State Republican executive committee has author ity to nominate a candidate for the vacancy, blit there is the problem of getting a new name* on the ballot in many counties using paper ballots. The election is little more than a week off. Some counties probably already have printed the general elec tion ballot with Mr. Watson’s name on it, he added.
